Him and Phil were missing and the ratings were way down.

We get it, he's black...

He did play a decade of golf at a level no one has ever reached before and will not reach since. Truly remarkable run.

Even if his game has turned to number 2

You mean except for Jack and Arnold?  Tiger's got the skills to win a few more tournaments if he can get healthy.  Back in the 60s, though, it was Jack vs. the field in most tournaments, much like Tiger a decade ago.

2014-04-16 04:02:09 PM
Yes, he only won 5 events last year.  He should just hang it up and take up knitting!

2014-04-16 04:02:42 PM
His plateau was higher than Jack's, but Jack's was a bit longer (and with a spike at the end for one more major that I don't think we'll see from Tiger).

Jack is awesome and was always my dad's favorite. But if you put on your sabermetrics glasses and take a hard look Tiger's resume was better than Jack's a good long time ago, major count notwithstanding.

What's interesting is the no-tiger masters ratings dropping by 25%. I love watching me some golf but those farkers have a problem. Half the old-school golf stalwarts hate tiger's guts... but they ain't got anyone even close to moving the needle the way tiger does. The only guy who even generates any meaningful percentage of Toger's ratings numbers is Phil and he's years older and on the way down himself.

Jack isn't the problem when comparing the two - it's 'the field'. Your rank and file event in Jack's day was filled out with a bunch of trunk-slammers. That hasn't been true for a long, long time. The fields today are so much stronger it's ridiculous.

I have no idea who won the masters.  1/3 of my television viewing is dedicated to sports. Golf may have a problem.

Yep, like comparing Richard Petty to today's NASCAR field.

Bubba Watson and you missed out.  Jordan Speith, a 20 year old had him shaking early on the front 9, but stumbled on 8,and 9 and never regained his composure.

I thought it was great to watch.

Subby, you are aware that Tiger Woods has been the number 1 Golfer in terms of points for 679 weeks correct?

Points based off of finishes, not cash earnings (where he's also #1)

Here's the official World Golf Ranking system:

Also here's a list of points from 2013:

One comes along every generation.  I remember Jack practically winning majors at will in the 60's.  And Arnold.  Before that it was Sam Snead winning 82 tour events and 7 majors.  Not to mention Ben Hogan and Bobby Jones.

I don't understand why the ratings were down so significantly. I watched pretty much the full final round, and that was easily the most golf I've watched all year, multiplied by 100.

2014-04-16 05:25:22 PM
Haha, local sports radio had the Jack vs. Tiger discussion last week. It's the same as the Pedro Martinez vs. Nolan Ryan debate, do you favor really good for a long time or absolutely dominant for a shorter period. I have to pick Tiger, Pedro, and Vince Lombardi for the win.

Because the game was won after the 9th hole.  The rest of the holes were a formality.  It was boring for a large number of people since no one was putting pressure on Bubba.  The most compelling story was Rory losing to the noncompeting amateur that was paired up with him.

I assume that the ratings decrease included the front 9.....

It wasn't just Tiger's absence, although that did play a large role.  For those of us in the northeast, last weekend was unseasonably warm, on the heels of  an absolutely miserable winter that had delivered record snowfall totals and colder than average temperatures until the last week of March.

I am a golf fan and did watch the final round (in addition to the previous three), but if I were just a casual fan, I would not have made a point to sit down Sunday and watch the Masters when I could have been outside in shorts and a t-shirt.

2014-04-16 06:06:38 PM
For those that didn't listen to the audio, I heard this on the radio this morning.  DeFord came across as being sarcastic.  He actually seems to be mocking Golf magazine for putting a non-LPGA woman on the cover since Tiger wasn't in the Masters.  In listening to the spot, I got the impression he was disgusted with the fat white guy's man crush on Tiger.

I don't care what color he is, the sycophantic cock smoking got old after the 5th year, and his 'fans' seem to have all turned away from the game after they found out its a lot farking harder in real life than on X box.

This. Well said. The fair weather "in the hole" yelling drunk douchebags can all f*ck off and watch kite sailing or modified shovel racing....seemed to spawn a generation of golfers who don't fix divots, ball marks and rake bunkers and seem to think hitting into you on every f*cking hole is OK as well as throwing hissy fits and their clubs....guys it's a game of precision not power Tiger won because he was putting lights out.....

Except Nolan was only brilliant a few times a season, while Pedro was almost untouchable for 5 years. Not that Ryan was not good, but there is no way you could compare him to Pedro.

Ask at a bar if Nolan or Pedro was the better pitcher, and you will get people making passionate arguments, based on nothing but.passion, that Nolan was better, and was so much better that asking the question is silly.

Kids these days, amirite? They don't play a game exactly like you think they should, the arrogant whippersnappers! Should we get off your lawn, too?

Just stirring the shiat. I don't play golf. I do own a set of clubs, and I do occasionally find myself on a golf course, flailing wildly at golf balls, but I wouldn't dignify my actions as "playing golf". I'm there to smoke cigars and provide comedic relief. Top Golf is much more my speed. I do fix divots, but I'm not sure what you mean by ball marks, and I've never raked a bunker because I've yet to get stuck in one. Bunkers are usually close to the green, a place I rarely see without taking a drop.

Past his prime? He's farking 38. There are guys that play in the NFL longer than that.

Why do sports fans have such a hard-on for arguing who's #1 of all time?  I'm a fan of many sports and I still don't get it.  Each sport has a different era where an athlete or team ruled the roost under the conditions that they played in.  It's impossible, using either stats or "the eye test" to compare the different generations.  Would the Babe have fared as well against today's specialty relief pitching and dedicated closers?  Could Lebron have handled the differences in 50's NBA travel and officiating?  Could Richard Petty still win 200 races with a less barnstormy schedule?

No doubt Tiger & Jack are the kings of their respective generations, but the environment for each is far different.  Jack played with persimmon woods, Tiger uses titanium "woods".  Jack didn't have the speed, strength, and flexibility regimens Tiger has.  Tiger has deeper overall fields than Jack had.  Course maintenance is far more developed today...and so on & so on.

Appreciate Jack for what he did, and Tiger for what he did.  There is no true #1 all-time great.

/Although if it hasn't been revamped recently (I admittedly haven't kept up with it), the "World Golf Ranking" is a joke. It started out as an IMG-developed metric to rank golfers...and who was IMG's top golf client when it was developed?

If you consider his prime to be the period in which he won 6 of the 11 majors played between the 1999 PGA and 2002 US Open, and 27 of 78 events he played during a similar timeframe, he's past his prime.

Even if you consider a wider prime to include everything up to the 2008 US Open, he's past it. Not that he can't still win, but his prime is in the rearview mirror and disappearing fast.

Bull crap! For all the talk of "gentleman's game" golfers, not just newcomers, are the biggest pigs around. Drinking @ 8am on the first tee, pissing everywhere on the course (because they are drunk), acting entitled to anyone not meeting their arbitrary standards of "class" while cursing a blue streak, using foot wedges, mulligans and flat out omitting strokes.

Tiger brought some uncouth guys to the course but don't pretend it was some.bastion of righteous manly gentlemen before he played. This is the sport of exclusive exclusionary country clubs, sexually harassing drink cart girls and altering scores to make yourself feel good.

I agree golf had serious issues well before Nike/Tiger, you forgot to mention the racism, classism, as well as the horrendous environmental practices....etc.

Or barring, that, someone who watched Nolan pitch more than just a handful of games and realized how many walks he issued.
