This.  As the cost of oil keeps going up, reaching prohibitively expensive levels, rail will come back into the forefront of moving things from place to place, instead of hugely inefficient trucks.

A smart man looking for a long term investment would put some money into rail companies.


Also, as those pictures show that everyone is posting, this engineer was a farking hero that saved that kids life by protecting him from that metal protrusion on the train,  not a douchebag.


The one problem being that we built up a lot of residential and commercial properties in the last ~50 years without setting aside any right-of-ways for new rail lines.

Rail usually clocks in between .025 and .04 cents per mile depending on fuel and container availability. I don't know offhand if those figures include bulk cars like liquid/grain cars/hoppers and not just rail containers. Those figures are quoted all of the time in logistics though, usually by a salesman trying to get your shipping department to move things rail.

/works driving a desk in logistics so I'm getting a kick etc.

One night, my girlfriend of the time and I were on the way to my local watering hole.  We were stop for a approaching train, about 5 cars from the gates.  A car pull out of line behind us and proceeds to drive around the gates.  My girlfriend said, "He's not going to make it!' and I said, "No, I think he across."  As usual, I was wrong.  The freight train, horn blaring and brakes screeching, comes flying through and seemed to clip the car, because the beam from the headlights went spinning through the trees.  I did a u-turn and took another route the bar.  When we got there,I told my friend what I had witnessed. One guys father was a train engineer, and he said his father told about one incident, where the same thing I saw happened. He said the train crew ran back to the busted up car and found the driver standing there unhurt, so they promptly began to beat the shiat out of him.

The shiatty part about this is that the kid probably will get a big payout, despite the train driver trying to save his life. Had the driver let him die, then there wouldn't be a lawsuit.

But in the end, it's the driver who has to live with himself.

He got a level-shot boot to the head by someone on a moving train, and yet didn't even fall over or wince.  That was a soft-contact hit, not a "swift kick" by any means.  I get swift kicks to the face from bare-footed toddlers all the time and those hurt.  If that engineer was trying to "swift kick" him, he'd have been on his ass writhing in pain.

The kid won't sue because the evidence that he was placing himself in a trespassing situation and deliberately endangering himself at the liability of the railroad would sink any case possible.

It just converts to 3 cents per mile like Uber said, its just written stupidly on the graph. It is unfortunately a common logistics industry practice is to write things in .XX cents per mile when really its just XX cents per mile and should be written .XX Dollars per mile. At least at the companies I worked for/vendors I've priced for.

Yep... We had 3 or 4 people a year get hit by a train in Flagstaff, most were people illegally crossing, or drunks on the tracks, but every once in awhile, someone got sucked in... 2/3 of downtown was on one side of the tracks, the rest on the other, and even waiting for a train  to go by, standing just outside the barrier, you could feel that shiat. It was actually pretty cool.


I'm in Flag, and I know someone here who was standing close to the train because the rushing wind felt cool... right up until something sticking out of the train smacked him, breaking off the top of his femur and shattering everloving fark out of his pelvis.  It's amazing he learned to walk again.

This story came to mind the other night when I watched a drunk dude try to get his head reeeeeel close to the train.  I said something to him and his friends, but in their opinion he didn't die so it's fine.  Also, wooooooooo-hoooooooo! and baaaarf!

When trains hit things, they stop and must assess damage.   From the posters description, he was on the opposite side of the tracks... as in, the train would have been between him and the car that got hit.  Therefore, there was nothing he could have done, and its likely the train would have been sitting there blocking the road for quite awhile.

...and trains are really long, and take some distance to stop, so no, simply walking around it was probably not an option.

/Arm chairing things is fun.

Am I the only person who watched the video?  The number of 'speeding train' comments and grim projections of getting sucked under or impaled on protruding metal when compared to the lazy amble present in the video is baffling.

Not that the conductor did wrong here that loop of steel or any other protrusion could have easily dazed the kid enough to make him fall and who knows which direction he would fall in?  He might have saved that kid's life, or limb(s).

I kinda doubt pipelines are much less expensive to lay than railroad track

That's not as silly as it sounds at first glance. A sealed pod that is neutrally bouyant in whatever fluid the pipeline is carrying should do the trick...

That's why I excluded the initial outlay. On the other hand, pipelines that are underground don't prevent the use of the land above them for agriculture, parking lots, or other facilities that are relatively inexpensive to dig up and repair as needed over the decades. Also no expensive safety equipment at grade crossings with pipelines...
