I think a 30% rise in food prices pretty much is the opposite of an upgrade.

Ukraine appears to have been being exploited by Russia leading up to these events, hence the former Ukrainian President who may have stolen up to $80 billion cut out and ran across the border to Russia for protection.

They 'had' a thriving tourist trade before Russia invaded and took over.  Now?  Well, wealthy Russians were already vacationing there before the take-over, but now fewer Russians want to do so because conquered territory, unstable government, talk of insurgents and guerrilla fighters.

Combine that with the complete loss of Ukrainian tourists and the loss of business related to Russia's idiocy and its impact on their economy and their whole economic base is turning to shiat.

Once again. Acknowledging that the Seahawks beat the shiat out of the Broncos does not make one a Seahawks fan. Acknowledging Obama has been badly outplayed does not make one a Putin fan. Refusing to acknowledge facts does make you an ignorant fanboy.

Summary of FA:  transitioning rapidly from country to another means changing from one set of currency, laws and national identification and is likely to cause turmoil, disruption, and problems.

But, since this is Russia we are talking about, obviously this is all Putin's fault.

If by 'transitioning', you mean invaded, conquered and the region losing its collective ass due to a loss of tourist dollars, you'd be correct.

I'm skeptical. Hasn't Ukraine's economy been in the shiatter for a while now?

Considering the first attempted action by the new Right Sector "government" was to outlaw Russian, I'm pretty sure Ukraine is going to have some rather large problems in the future.

Perhaps if the West was not backing them, this might not have happened? Just a thought.

The West wasn't backing them.  That was kinda part of the reason their economy wasn't doing hot.  Russia was offering a deal, but the asking price was basically economic dependence on Russia.

The EU was hemming and hawing over trade deals because of corruption and economic issues.  All these loan guarantees and economic aid packages weren't even being considered until Russia got all 19th century.

And the reason the West was weary was the Pro-Russian government was corrupt and essentially bleeding the government dry.

They lose Ukrainian citizenship how? Russia can't invalidate Ukrainian citizenship and passports, only Ukraine can do that.

FTFA: For those who want to keep their Ukrainian citizenship, however, authorities have set up a byzantine process and a strict deadline of Apr. 18 to do so. Those who don't meet the deadline automatically become Russian citizens.

Congratualtions comrade, you are now Russian whether you like it or not.

This is why people ethnically cleanse, so this shiat doesn't happen. After Ukraine because it's own lovely state they should have either deported the Russians or made them disappear.  Then there wouldn't be this problem.

Wait  what point was I making? Ah yes. Stalin sucks and Putin sucks.

I think. I'm just kind of prattling now....
