(Purple Clover)   Robert Downey Jr jumps onstage at Stings 60th birthday party and sings Sting's stuff better than he does. No, seriously, he blows Sting off the stage. (w/video)   (purpleclover.com) divider line 114

Trying to blow Sting on or off the stage usually takes about five days, what with all his tantric nut-control bullshiate.

Sting is a lazy bastard letting that hack sing. Next he'll drive Andy Summers and Copeland out of the band.

2014-04-16 12:48:54 PM
What I thought was great was that it was essentially a Sting impersonation that he's doing.  I wonder if that's what he sounds like singing something non-Sting.

I feel bad for Robert Downey Jr, the poor guy probably never gets laid.

Did he get that jacket from the walking dead?

Beating Sting at his own songs isn't hard.  It's all unintelligible until the last three words of each verse when he sings.

2014-04-16 01:13:41 PM
Really, all he has to do is repeat "Message in a Bottle" for a minute and a half straight...

2014-04-16 01:13:47 PM
Yeah, but he hasn't played Feyd yet.

Not so much.  I bought his album (not sure if he has just one), and was truly amazed at how good a singer and songwriter he his.  I put it on my iPod for travel, and in the middle of nowhere about a year later, this song comes on.  I think to myself "Oh my GOD, that's amazing.  I wonder who it is?"  It was Downey.

Video will not play.

Does he do Roxanne?  Cause the vocals in that song are frikkin' unreal high.  Any guy RDJ's age that can sing it correctly gets major props.

Can Sting even sing it in the original key?  Genuinely curious here.

Didn't RDJ actually release his own CD?  The man clearly has vocal chops.

How MA farkers have gone to a concernt only to have Peter Wolf jump up on stage and sing "Dirty Water"?

That wasn't one of Stings more difficult offering by any stretch but RDJ did more than a respectable job with it.

That wasn't a judgment or anything. I was trying to remember where I heard it, too. It sounded like something a standup comedian would do but I was drawing a blank.

Anyway, here it is.

Ever seen this? It's pretty old, and all I knew about RDJ was "drug user dickhole," but the first time I watched this I was like, holy fark, if dude can get it together he could be the greatest actor of this generation. To be fair, at that point nobody really knew Daniel Day-Lewis was God 2.0 yet...but still, this is not a great movie but he shows that he's great in it, and he sings like opera or something too.

I used to be really into him, but he's too popular now. Also, he just got married a few years ago, and from all accounts, they're a great match.

Hey, I like my fantasies of famous lovers, but I like them to be at least a little realistic.

He came across as John Mayer trying to sound like Sting.

But he walked in with respect an admiration and conducted himself with confidence and he knew the material and could pull it off.  Kudos are deserved.

Why did I read that as "Robert Downey Jr. jumped out of a cake"?  I really need new glasses.

That was clearly planned. For some reason it made me realize how much like Sting Dave Matthews sounds.
