But my cats still consider me a chair. And a bed. And a scratching post.

Subby can sit on the cat all they want, it's their ass that will suffer.

They are going to classify pets as "sentient beings"?  As in, able to make tools and use fire?  This could get interesting.

what a dumb article.  pets are property = pets are chairs?

/ pets are property.  it resolves all the issues.  since pets don't have complex feelings, their feelings aren't hurt by being classified as property. so, there is no issue.
// used to attend some animal law conferences.  when they tried to do real stuff, it was nice and i could even agree with a lot of it (for example, don't allow mule drawn carriages when the weather is too hot, have maximum hours, etc).  when they tried to argue that animals needed rights and should be classified as something other than property, i thought they'd stopped taking their medicine and needed a nap.

Let me guess what's next. Cats muscling up to casino tables. Betting enormous money on black. Or on red. Then leaping on the table chasing the little white ball on the spinning wheel.

It won't work.

Also, if pet has the same legal status as a chair or a lamp,  does it follow that France has no animal cuelty laws, in the same way the French  have no furniture cruelty laws?

Fun fact: In NC if you steal a dog you can be charged with a felony, steal a cat and the highest charge is a misdemeanor.

That's actually a bit of a translation error, here... animals were qualified as "biens meubles", or "meubles" for short, as opposite to "immeubles". "Meubles" are "movable assets", such as cars, furnitures, jewels, etc... were "immeubles" are "unmovable assets", i.e. real estate.
But "meuble" in French also means "furniture", which is why lots of people think that cats or dogs are in the same categories as lamps or chairs.

People for the ethical treatment of furniture are not going to be happy.

Well this means that I cannot sit on my horse anymore..... I guess it is off to the butcher so I can have some horse steaks.

That is one very stupid headline.

The law considers pets to be property.
Chairs are also property.
Cats are pets.
Therefore cats are chairs.

How very Monty Python of you.

If she weighs the same as a duck, she must be a witch.

Well, they can think and feel, which is enough to qualify cats and dogs for sentience.

Well, they were both personal property.  France has now upgraded pets from personal property to... some other status.

True story, a farmer was in court arguing a case that turned on what exactly personal property consisted of.  His statement to the judge was, "That gent argues, fair play to him that hay is personal property, and my cow is personal property, but it passes my understanding, how, barring a miracle, personal property can eat personal property, and shiat real estate."

France would never allow the sorts of laws that Americans keep trying to pass banning foie gras or the live steaming of shellfish.

So, if I accidently run over the neighbors cat in France will that be like running over the neighbors kid? Will it impose the same amount of fines and or jail time? Can they sue me for killing their four footed murder machine?

What if cats and dogs fight?  Do they need a legal system to resolve their differences?  Can you still spay a pet, or does that require consent?

Another non-sequitur.

A child is sentient
A cat is sentient
Therefore a cat is a child

I think we should emancipate the chairs and declare all our chairs to be pets.

That's not what sentient means. Hell, on my good days I'm lucky if I can do just one of those two things reliably.
