FTFA:
Chandler advises keeping your dogs on a leash while at the beach in Seaside, mainly because dealing with your dog after it rolls around in a dead whale would be a "horrible way to spend your vacation."

I have no doubt my dog would do that.

Went surfing once on Little Talbot Island in Florida.  We rounded one point on the beach and there was a dead whale beached, about 15ft long or so.  It had a snout kinda like a bottlenose dolphin.

It's kinda freaky when you get the full perspective on how big some of the animals in the ocean are.  There's some big shiat in the ocean.

The smell was unreal putrid.

There is no problem that can't be solved without the use of enough high explosives.

They're not very big, no more than a size 10.

I was but a wee lass of 18 years when they tried to blow up the whale in 1970. Problem was they used too much dynamite and placed it in one spot instead of placing sticks of dynamite around the whale. So instead of disintergrating the whale into very small pieces for the scavengers to clean up, the whale blew up sending large chunks of blubber quite a distance from the beach where it struck and damaged not only vehicles, but it hit buildings & parking lots too. And most of the carcass remained on the beach. Removing the remainder of the carcass fell to highway workers.

One of our neighbors at the time was parked at least a mile from the blast zone, but that didn't prevent his car from being struck and damaged by a large chunk of blubber.

Nowadays they just bury whale carcasses on the beach where they land. If the sand isn't deep enough, they're moved to another beach to be buried.

Geez, I remember this from the paleo days of the internet. early 90s.

I worked for a Telecom who was a pioneer ISP in the region. They encourages us to muck around on our breaks and after work trying this "world wide web" they were pushing.so they could advertise by word of mouth,

One of the first site I visited was that exploding whale site.

It took me about 40 mins to download that video file onto a floppy disk, so I could take it home and watch it on my 486.

Good times.

Next to the dead whale. You can't miss it.
If it's moving, it's not the dead one.

I'll never forget the wildlife documentary I saw about 20 years ago that showed how rotting whale carcasses are irresistible to grizzly bears... they find putrid blubber so utterly tantalizing that they can't resist rubbing their faces and snouts in it.

The videographer said that he couldn't get any closer to the scene, not because of fear of the bears -- they were totally distracted -- but because the stench of the carcass was so bad.  And yet here were these bears rolling in it like my cat rolls in catnip.

I spent about 15 minutes searching for video but came up empty-handed.
