I love hockey fights like this.  Guy gets in a nice solid hook and knocks down his opponent, then stops immediately to check on the guy to make sure he's okay.

I like how the refs let them hit each other it but as soon as someone goes down they're in there like boxing refs to stop the fight.

I still don't understand the fighting in hockey. What's the point?

I could have told you this kind of hooliganism would happen once they started letting the coloreds play hockey.  shameful really.

Retaliation, intimidation, protection of smaller skilled players, momentum are chiefest reasons for fighting in the NHL and the North American style of play in general. Gretzky wouldn't have had his career length and stats if not for the threat of Dave Semenko and Marty McSorley. He would have been pounded on every shift by the bigger players.

In this case, not much.  Usually it's to keep the other team from taking cheap shots on your guys.  I remember Steve Yzerman saying one time that if they banned fighting from hockey, the slashing would be so bad that he wouldn't want to continue playing.

There isn't much risk of real injury (other than the knuckles on your punching hand hitting helmet) until they hit the ice.  At that point, you have skates off the surface flailing about, a guy lying with his head near a hard surface, gravity, and the ability to punch from above.  Real injury could ensue, which is why even one punch thrown when on the ground will get you a match penalty.

This was JJ's 2nd NHL game.  Nice.

It has to do with the fact that it isn't boxing and they aren't boxing refs.  Boxers know to stop if the ref touches them.  These guys are basically just trying to beat each other up and swinging pretty wildly.  If someone goes down you can get on top of them or separate them without risking getting nailed by an errant haymaker.

Since even the announcers think it was staged, the point would be to keep the fans from being bored.  Sometimes hockey can be as boring as soccer.  The hitting keeps it a little more interesting.

Sometimes basketball can be a little boring if it wasn't so high scoring.  If they allow goal tending in basketball, the scores would drop a lot.  I say give it a try during an exhibition game.

These guys both have unbreakable steel razor blades on their boots, and they're fighting with their hands?

Huh?

The league would sell a lot more tickets if they introduced MMA rules and actually let guys fight until someone won.

There is no point except it gives drunk Canadians the same feeling erections used to give them before their team started missing the playoffs and they got fat.
