I love Game of Thrones, but I'd never call it the best show ever on television. That said, the reasons this article gives for why that is are incredibly stupid. "It can't be great TV because it has sex and violence. I mean, Rome had sex and violence, too, but Rome was, like, a real place."

What the fark kind of logic is that?

it's a combination of the sheer number of well written, well acted and well directed characters.

throw in some tits, some blood, and don't forget the dragons, and it's pretty compelling.

besides, Deadwood is the greatest TV show ever.

Say what you will about Game of Thrones, but that article appears to have been written by a fourth grader.

Also, why kick Carnivale when it's down?

American Decency Association: besides, Deadwood is the greatest TV show ever.

I don't get the love for Deadwood.  I thought it was kind of good the first season, okay in the second season, and dreadful in the third.  I thought Swearengen was great, but Seth was about as interesting as drywall (and I think Timothy Olyphant is quite sexy/appealing).  It had some other good characters/actors, but overall the show was utterly boring in scenes without Swearengen.

Is it all about sex and violence? Has there been any sex since season 3? I think season 1 had a lot, maybe as a cynical hook, maybe because it's in the book, but they've certainly toned it down. I wouldn't say it's a show about sexygoodtimes, anymore.

2014-04-16 07:08:07 AM
Some of the acting is absolutely wooden (Dany, I'm looking at you).  The accents are terrible and pot luck (Tyrion, this is relevant to you even though your character is great).

But overall, the show is pretty compelling, beautiful and thought provoking.

The author of this article doesn't seem to understand fandom. GoT fans who say it is the greatest show in history are just like the Justin Bieber fans who think he is the greatest singer ever. Is their zeal for the show a bit over-the-top? Sure, but they are just having fun, enjoying the program and expressing the enjoyment it gives them.

It sounds to me like the author of this article has never been a true fan of anything in their life. Sure, they may like something, but they have never truly, from their soul, loved something like a GoT fan loves GoT. Which is too bad for said author, because being a fan like that is a whole lot of fun.

So he's saying that Game of Thrones has sharp knees.

No, the author did love something once, and gave it their heart, but that thing betrayed them. Perhaps the writers started phoning it in, perhaps the network cancelled it, perhaps she was from Canada all along, who knows? Now the authors only pleasure in life is in finding superiority to others by professing moderation and eschewing the trappings of love.

It's just a matter of time, really.  I used to say LOST was the greatest TV show ever.

Years out now I can say I was wrong.  I really enjoyed it, but looking back, nah.  Not even close.  I was just super excited at the time when it was on.

Besides, Cheers is the greatest TV show of all time

I'm starting to slowly watch season 2, so I'm.. skipping the article.

And Babylon 5 is still my gold standard in television.

I never watched West Wing, but I can't imagine that dressing dudes in suits and having them talk while walking down some hallways is in anyway the cinematic equivalent of the globe-spanning production of GOT. I don't know if it makes GOT a "better show", but I tend to appreciate cinematography and scale.

I'll admit that I was never really engrossed by the Lord of the Rings movies, but I bought the DVDs anyway because I thought the production value was incredible.

I wouldn't say it's the best ever, but it's certainly one of the best shoes on TV right now. Without the sex and violence, it would be just another boring fantasy world. It's done so well because it's more relatable than most fantasy.

RobertBruce: No.historical antecedents? Wars of the roses comes to mind.

Which is why I'm going to laugh when a Lannister ends up on the throne when all is said and done.  The Tudors were Lancasters, Henry the VII was John of Gaunt's great-great-grandson.

Also, anyone who says it's the "greatest TV show of all time" is clearly wrong.  It might be the best fantasy/sci-fi/geek-genres show, but that depends on how you classify The Prisoner.

As much as I was lukewarm to the show when it was on the air, in hindsight I can't see anything standing up to The Wire.

I can't stand Aaron Sorkin shows.  They're all the same: a bunch of overly-glib characters talking fast while walking down hallways, forced office romances, references to musicals every here and there, and conservatives who aren't really conservatives.

First of all, how can something be the "best show in the history of television" when 80 percent of it is lurid sex and violence? That's like saying Hustler magazine is better than The New Yorker. Not to come off as prudish, but let's be honest here. This show is all about sexual intercourse and murder, done in armor.

Yeah, that's cogent. *eyeroll* Wish I could undo the click wasted on that nonsense.

And I don't think any of the people having sex were wearing armor.

I'd say Game of Thrones gave me the best season 1 I've ever seen.  The set-up, the characters, the slow reveal of the plot and sense of danger were amazing.  And episode 9 shocked the hell out of me.  That was the peak and while the rest has been good, I don't think it will ever live up to its masterful beginning.

No, but it's on my list. I'm going to try and schedule some time off when Mrs. Samurai goes down there for her fitness convention. I also need to go back to Columbus and see how conservation of CSS Jackson is progressing; a classmate did his thesis research on Confederate ironclad construction.

Hmm, fark seems to have removed a bit of my post. Should have started "episode of season 4 that comes before all other episodes of season 4".
