Mostly schoolkids, this has to be hell for their parents waiting to hear what has happened to their child.  I hope there is not a greater loss of life than known so far.

2014-04-15 11:57:07 PM
Man I thought the fark headline was serious.  I don't see any reference to this captain abandoning ship and leaving all the kids behind at least.

2014-04-15 11:57:42 PM
CNN is reporting all the school kids were rescued so...that could be utter bullshiat.

Strange coincidence that this South Korean ferry sank thousands of miles away in the Indian Ocean.

Is this not more likely a case of Best Korea hiring the captain of the USS Vincennes?

Don Lemon: "Let's bring on our Maritime Correspondent Damian Welch and former New York City Ferry Operator Tony Shapiro. With us we also have Michael Phelps, Former gold medalist. Thanks for being here with us gentlemen. So the question we all want answered is, how could something like this happen?"

Tony: "Well, Don, We simply don't know yet. This is an investigation that will take time and it would be foolish to jump to conclusions or assumptions before we have all the facts"

Don: "Hm. Michael? How do you think this happened?"

Michael: "I..swim. I don't know why I'm on."

Don: "Because we're farking paying you. What do you think happened."

Michael: "I think big ship fall down go boom"

Don: "Interesting. Damien, what do you think of that?"

A little far south for the North Koreans to be involved, but they're nuts, so maybe.

Damn. I hope they find more survivors.

If it was Best Korea, the South Koreans would go ape on them for torpedoing a ferry full of schoolkids.  In college, I was in a vets club, and guys who had been in Viet Nam said the ROK's were crazy mf'ers and were not to be farked with.  They just shook their heads, and said, when the ROK'shiat a village that supported the VC, they killed everybody and everything down to and including the chickens.  I don't know if they're still this badass.

see how that works?

I'm afraid I have to report that zimbomba63 will no longer be commenting, as he started raving about the "FARKING COMPUTER" and pounding his head on the desk.  The doctor was called and has given him a sedative.  Sssh, he needs his rest.

Seems like a Best Korean torpedo would feel/sound like more than a bump.

The ferry brush against the skull of a submerged Godzilla en route to Tokyo Bay?  It collide with one of those whales the Japanese aren't allowed to hunt any more?

From the picture I've seen either it managed to float on its side or is in real shallow water. If it's the latter I can think of what caused the thump people reported hearing.

Maybe they did get sunk by a North Korean sub... They probably collided with it and the sub also sank.

That is true but they have changed a great deal. It is almost a completely different country than where the Vietnam era guys were from. Most young guys are extreme metrosexuals.

Reports are it has turned turtle and hundreds may still be on board. Maybe the Costa douche wasn't such a dolt for fully beaching his wounded boat before it had a chance to do that.

I think it wasn't so much 'floating on it's side' as 'slowly rolling over, and got photographed partway.'  Article says it took about 2 hours to go down.  And there's a final pic with just the bow above water, which means the rest of the hull is under, which means there was probably enough water there in the first place.

It MIGHT have hit a reef or something, but if the water there was that shallow, rescue ships would probably know about it by now.

Wonder if it hit a shipping container, like in that Redford flick?

OK, to re-phrase; Anyone know what malfunction is allowed in a 480 feet, 6,586 gross tonnes passenger ship that would cause its hull to be breached?

Doesn't have to be a hull breach.  A decrease in water displacement through an increased list beyond a certain point will cause the ship to capsize and sink.

Although it doesn't really look like it based on the pictures maybe it was one of those ferry's where the front drops down to allow for cars to drive on?  There was this incident http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MS_Herald_of_Free_Enterprise years ago...not sure if the same type of thing could happen when the ship was already out...

Nearly 300, mostly teenagers, in hypothermia-inducing conditions or drowned, and with 6000 tonnes of ship on top of them.

You stay classy.

No where in any reports has that been mentioned. People are just trying to work out how it could've and no one has said anything about a door being open.

There is a bright and positive side to this tragedy.

The seafloor is really well mapped in this area.

2014-04-16 09:12:22 AM
This appears to be some current considerations.

1. Hitting a rock on the side, causing a large tear in the hull.
2. The ferry hitting a rock while passing directly above it.
3. Cargo on the ferry shifting violently and impacting the side of the ship.
