BSABSVR: Oh boo for fixing the headline.

Agreed.  that "hall of cocaine" picture was hilarious.

2014-04-16 01:04:32 AM
Wonder how they're going to dispose of that $200 million worth of cocaine?

2014-04-16 01:06:34 AM
The $100 million in cocaine?? Probably use it as bait for the next bust...

2014-04-16 01:08:59 AM
cool does that mean we finally won the war on drugs?

2014-04-16 01:09:23 AM
Give taxpayer money to the government to help keep drug prices high and the black market thriving?

Every year there's a new record bust... you start wondering if the DEA is just shipping what it catches back and saying "That was fun! Try again!"

2014-04-16 01:10:51 AM
So they recovered all $30,000 of the cocaine?

a Coast Guard law enforcement detachment aboard Her Majesty's Canadian Ship Glace Bay on March 15 boarded a suspect fishing boat and found no drugs aboard. After boarding and searching the vessel, the boat caught fire, officials said.

Man, what is it with these people?  If they come to your house they'll shoot your dog, if they come to your boat they'll burn it down.

Not even close, the Gutan in 2007 was 20 tons, 7 times the size of this seizure.

I blame the Canucks, they're known to be careless with matches.

Even if coke were still legal, it'd be smuggling. *shrug*

Of course, you can argue that there'd be no need for illicit trade, and yes - legal imports would skyrocket. But cigarettes get smuggled in to avoid state and local taxes. This'd be the same.

And cocaine, afaik, doesn't grow in the US like tobacco does.

So the USCG would still be out there doing its thing.

300 million? That's an expensive 8 ball.

2014-04-16 02:07:38 AM
I don't mind the feds rounding up the cocaine. That stuff'll hurt people. Or so I learned in the movies.

Nowhere near as much, and without the same level of negative effect on society.

It would be a massive win for all of us.

300 million. Is that like 2 and half kilos in cop math?

FTFA: "It is one of the larger hauls the Coast Guard has brought in, in recent memory," said Lt. J.G. Meaghan Gies at a press conference in Miami Beach.

Inflation, man. Is why all dollar value records keep getting beaten.

3.5 tons. Less than a box truck load. * YAWN * Oh, I mean, yay, Coast Guard!

I gotta be honest, even as pro-legalization this is a good use of resources. That much unregulated and uninspected cocaine is a bit troubling. If it were $300 million in undeclared papayas I would want the shipment seized. Cocaine even legal is a dangerous material in that quantity and should be imported at least as a pharmaceutical. Plus that's what $50 million in unpaid import duties or something?

5 star chef of tv dinners: 300 million. Is that like 2 and half kilos in cop math?

They're using a $94/gram conversion which is at least ball-park retail, based on what people on Fark say.  I'd be the last to know personally.

It sounds like a case of "Nice boat you have there....it would be a shame if something happened to it...."

Typically it's $50-60 a gram.

Damn Pam got hot. With her freakiness, combined with the weightloss, it would be worth keeping her in cocaine to tap that.

What are the chances this actually put a dent in anything?

It's like stealing a few DVDs at Wal-Mart to try and put them out of business.

2014-04-16 10:55:16 AM
So how much is that crack going to be worth once the government redistributes that on the streets?

2014-04-16 11:18:51 AM
Except for the hauls they made for the CIA.

2014-04-16 11:23:31 AM
In regular cop-math, that was 867 trillion dollars worth of cocaine.

2014-04-16 11:54:29 AM
I remember the good old days when the USCG in South Florida was pretty much stoned 24/7.  Hell, Lou Gossett Jr was on coke when he made that recruitment commercial.  Ahhh, those were the days.

2014-04-16 01:25:21 PM
Minus 100m that fell "overboard", 50m for the DEA's cut, 50m for Rob Ford, 10m for Charlie Sheen, leaves 90m left. That's a lot of paperwork for $20m worth of coke.

A couple of years ago, our local Sheriff Department had the audacity to claim that they confiscated a marijuana grow operation in the Klamath National Forest of over 1/2 billion dollars. I believe they weighed the plants before they pulled them out of the ground.
