(Wired)   Ok Here we have a $32000 electric motorbike with a 14hp motor, weighs 350lbs, has a range of 100 miles and it looks so cool. Why don't you want one?   (wired.com) divider line 75

It does not look cool at all. It looks like you are riding the unholy offspring of a snail and a mechanical bull. It needs a total redesign cosmetically at least.

Gee, $32k for an IKEA motorbike.

Let me get my checkbook.

What's the left foot pedal for?  It looks like a brake, but that's the wrong side.

also, this.  It looks like a cartoon snail with a wheel sticking out of its mouth.

$32K moped?

2014-04-15 09:10:27 PM
My great-grandfather built a faster bike with comparable range...back in 1975.  For Christ's sake build form around function, not the other way around.

I wouldn't spend $35k on a car, never mind a bike.
Bring it down to $5k and we'll talk.

NFA: $32K moped?

I'm not even sure those things are as fast a moped. They sounded like they were straining just to reach bicycle speeds.

I drive a Jeep, so I have a certain affinity for odd, ugly vehicles.  And I think this think is kinda cool.

But 14 HP?  On a 350 pound bike?  What the hell is the point of that?  That's awful.

2014-04-15 09:26:21 PM
Make it 1/4 the price, 100 lbs lighter, twice the range, 4x the power, and not look like a half aborted idea and maybe we'll talk.

This.

My car bluebooks for 12k and I am proud of that.

I could see a nice bike were I in a state with good roads and weather though.

What market does this serve?  It has the performance specs of an anemic scooter but it's twice the size, five times the price, and it doesn't have the level of styling you'd pay a premium for, say, from Ferrari or Lamborghini.  Seriously, this is only 13 grand:

img838.imageshack.us

Better range, much better performance, looks better, and you can get almost 2.5 of them for the same price as the cheapest block on wheels from the article.

Now just get the price point down a smidgen...

100 mile range isn't enough. I went for over a 250 ride yesterday and if I had that, I would have had to stop twice to recharge.

This.

Those "design exercises" falsely lead people to believe that electric motorbikes are still that primitive...

The clip did not help their cause -- it looked worse than described. Well, for the 3 seconds out of 30 you could see the bikes in it, anyway. The railroad snow-plow clip linked at the end was more interesting.

Where are the drugs?

The Wired headline indicated drugs were involved.

I think the story of how that stupid thing was made is probably a better story than the fact it was made, and according to Wired that story involves drugs so you know it's gotta be good.

Now that's a fine looking bike.  decently priced for an all electric as well.

I actually think it looks cool, but the specs do leave a lot to be desired.  I can't see why it couldn't accommodate a more powerful electric motor.

Local electric motor bike company. Not great, but so what. Cheapest transportation this side of a moped.

Unless you are a cute lady in a sundress you shouldn't ride a moped

Assuming you start charged, you have 250 miles to go. You go 93 miles and have to stop to recharge. You now have 93 miles completed which leaves 157 miles to go. You go another 93 miles on your first charge. You have now completed 186 miles and have 64 miles to go. You have charged once, and your batteries are now depleted. How do you propose to go 64 miles without charging a second time?

I ride a motorcycle. Here a few reasons I wouldn't touch that thing.

$32,000 would buy me 6 really good bikes I already want.
It's ugly as hell.
At least once every few weeks I see a story about someone on a bike being murdered by some asshat who "didn't see them", I'm not going to add "didn't hear him" to the list of excuses.
I get 150 miles on my 3 gallons before hitting the reserve, 100 mile range is a step down.
I don't want to see how a 350 lbs bike handles in wind gusts on the freeway.

/ I would love a silent motorcycle
// in some sort of perfect world without all you other people
/// too many "I didn't see him!" murders

A friend of mine ripped the drive train out of his Suzuki GSX-R and is replacing it with a 200hp electric motor. That should be fun.

dr_blasto: Grab a truck's tailgate and go for the tow

This is completely impractical. For one thing, it's really difficult to steer a bike one-handed while your other arm is hyperextended and taking quite a bit of strain. For another, you're presupposing that a convenient truck will happen to drive by, which means you must constrain your riding area to those which are populated and not just populated, but with a higher than average distribution of truck drivers. I just don't think this is a realistic solution.

dr_blasto: Just go downhill

Reasonable, but where are you going to find a 64-mile downhill incline? Again, impractical.

dr_blasto: lasso a horse

Okay, now you're talking. That works.

Repo Man: They are still in their own class, but they're racing electric bikes at the Isle of Man TT

I've seen the MotoCzysz e-bike in free practice circulating with pro-built supersport literbikes.  It was surreal to watch a GSXR1000 and the MotoCzysz come out of the last corner leading onto the front straight and the MotoCzysz silently walk away from the GSXR1000 like it was folding space.

After seeing it in action I've got no problem at all with electric racing.  Less parts to break.
