Who cares how many people get killed or injured as long as they're killed by a knife instead of a gun, amirite?!

It has to be 7 in order to qualify as a massacre by Chicago standards.

Don't blame the knife.

Is he 5 for 5? Those are pretty good stats. The lid last week was 0 for 22, just a lot of wounded people.

On a more serious note, is the 'Asinine' tag for subby or the killer?

It wasn't completely clear. My take was that he was 5 for 7 ... but the girl on the lawn might have been the female fatality making it 5 out of 6.

What also isn't clear was if he was selective in his targeting or whether he stabbed anyone who got close? Did anyone try to stop him or did they just get clear?

I am assuming there were a lot of witnesses but there is surprisingly little detail.

I was wondering if the 5 people just happened to be the only ones in the house at the time, and the rest were outside. Neighbor said there were a bunch of people out back...

Hey, world. Stop identifying these random assholes in the news. That is what they want.
Stop it. Just call them what they are: random assholes. "Some random asshole is in custody today after stabbing a bunch of people. Tune in tomorrow when we announce the random asshole's trial date and proposed sentencing date"
And that is all you should hear. Got the random asshole off the street. Safe now.
Edward Murrow building? Some random asshole. He's dead now.
Boston Marathon bombing? Some random assholes. One's dead, and one's soon to be.
Those world trade centers? Bunch of random assholes. They are all dead. Safe now.
Anyone afraid of random assholes? No. they are everywhere. Can we not train people to deal with random assholes?
Hey! There's a random asshole up on the roof. He's shooting at people. Let's get him!
Hey! Look, some random asshole is trying to shoot up the bank. Let's get him!.
Fark random assholes. Stop being afraid of them.
Train yoursleves to deal with them.
They aren't "terrorists" - they are just random assholes and go out and stomp them into farking puddles, people.

Five really the high count in Calgary, according to this article written by someone who had the same question as the rest of us. The author must be from the USA.

You probably can't find more than five people in one place in Calgary.

I thought I saw an 'amusing' tag for this story so I was thinking "ok, this really pathetic long-running 'let's make jokes marginalizing Canada because of their really small (in comparison) population and super cold weather' is getting goddamn old if you're laughing at them for having 'small' killing sprees".

But then I realized it was an 'asinine' tag, and now I don't know what to believe anymore so I'm just going to eat an entire brick of cheese and listen to Echo and the Bunnymen.

In cases like this even if there's video it takes time for a real picture to emerge, they have to interview any surviving witnesses, collect and analyze the evidence, etc...

Bodies are easy to count.  Figuring out what happened and why can be hard.

I'm willing to bet that the kid was on some form of psychotropic drug such as anti-depressants like most  spree killers in the last decade.

A lot of my friends from university used to live there and I was a visitor dozens of times.

I feel bad for the neighbours because it was almost definitely the same people still.

The layout of the house and what that implies before the details start to emerge is what's seriously bothering me. And the Megadeth thing.

Sure but the news hounds usually corner a witness or two within the first 24 hours.

I'm sure everything will come out sooner or later.

I don't know how often mass stabbings happen, but I'm quite surprised that someone would actually be able to pull this off without being subdued (being a short-range weapon and all).

This proves socialized healthcare kills more than private healthcare. Canada could save only one or two due to their substandard care. America was able to save all of them.

This is pretty terrifying.  I mean, my friends were at parties all along that area; I'd bet at least some of them were at that party at some point in the day.  I'm glad we were all at Cowboys by that point instead of party surfing.  Pretty sobering to think that while I was celebrating BSD, getting drunk, and dancing away the night, some poor kids were getting stabbed while probably trying to do the same.

What does that have to do with survival rates of knife attacks?

Also, I'm lazy. You made the claim, you back it up.

For anyone asking why he wasn't subdued...

It was the last day of classes at the university for the year, known as BSD(Bermuda Shorts Day).  In my day, the drinking started at 6:00am.  By 1:20am we would be lucky to be walking, let alone capable of stopping someone from getting all staby.  Since it sounds like they were all in Uni, I'd suspect that's why they were easy targets.

2014-04-15 05:47:03 PM
To be fair, it was Bermuda Shorts day at the university.  That can drive a person to stab 5 people right there.

2014-04-15 06:01:35 PM
The perp sounds like he had everything going for him; law school. son of a policeman, no major priors, etc. It will be very interesting to find out what made him snap.

News reports are that people tried to subdue him, but were unsuccessful (My bet being because they were drunk, and he wasn't, as he had just gotten to the party from working at a supermarket)

2/10

Unless you're new to English, it's frankly impossible for me to imagine anyone having any difficulty understanding what he said.

wildcardjack: You probably can't find more than five people in one place in Calgary.

Populationwise or densitywise?

a)  I can forgive your rather outdated knowledge of anything outside your own house, because Texas, but you might be surprised to learn that Calgary passed a population of 5 at some indeterminate time prior to 1884.

b) Good effort, but could have used another sentence or so to get the point across.

Calgary police chief calls 5-homicide stabbing spree "worst mass murder in city's history." Or as it's known in Detroit, "Tuesday morning"

Or as it's known in Chicago, 7-7:30pm on a Friday night.
