It ended with the battle of Plataea, which the Greeks won.

In those days the mad Emperor of Russia gibbered on his throne in Moscow, while around his vast empire forces gathered and shifted, as if on strings held by his ethereal hands. The hordes of Western Chaos shifted and gathered in return. At last on the plains of southern Europe the cowards showed their face, and the battle was joined.

In the grim darkness of the 21st Century, there is only war.

Using 300 military personnell to get rid of fat pro-Russian demonstrators that have taken over policemen is reasonable.

The fact that Putin will use this as an excuse to invade and occupy the Ukraine is not.

But the Ukrainian government is doing the right thing. And if Moscow invades, there are US warships in the region with signals and AWACS support. Ukraine may be at a disadvantage militarily, but unless wants to commit suicide and attack US warships, at least the Ukrainian army won't have to worry about fog of war problems as much as the Russians will.

Maybe they're just tired of playing games and intend on forcing Russia's hand.  Right now, playing the waiting game isn't working for Ukraine.

I'm sure they won't have a problem just enforcing the border and hassling any invasion by Russia. They don't have to stop the Russians; just being there means they would actively be able to report invasion details to NATO and the UN.

Not that the UN would do anything about it, of course.

Has Ukraine politely asked Russia to stop the shenanigans yet? Morally, I think it's a tough sell to go right into shooty bomby stuff unless you've sent a formal request to the aggressor that they stop aggressing.

And maybe they plan to offer a certain chunk of Ukrainian land to the Russians that's north of Kiev by the Belarus border. Perhaps it can be referred to as some sort of "exclusion zone" that's intended as a peace offering and gesture of goodwill.

Indeed.

Funny how everyone has forgetting that whole reset part. Almost everyone.

Seriously, just ~300?  They sent what, 2 companies?  I know they have a lot on their minds internally, but couldn't it have been an even battalion at least?

I guess if they don't want to be seen as overbearing from Russia's point of view in the slightest, this might work... but I sure hope there are 5-10x as many actually moving into position, and this is just the public feint that was revealed.

Yea I missed an "L".  Holy fark.

But my point stands.  Obama is in over his head. Community organizer, yea he's qualified to give out free legal advice. President of the US and leader of the free world, not qualified. He's good at whipping up followers to a frenzy, but is he a true leader? no.  He never takes responsibility.

We already know that you think that President Obama can't do anything right. In this case, what do you suggest? War with Russia? If we step in, that's what will happen. The USA has so little capital when it comes to international support, due to recent events. So we are stuck appeasing a bit, it seems to me anyway.

All in the same thread! It's like a House-of-Tards

Of course the important story is this:
Ukraine government forces repelled an attack Tuesday by about 30 gunmen at an airport.

Seems the Russians were trying to pull a "Crimea."
That only works once.

And UN observers on their way to eastern Ukraine finally.
This time it isn't going to go Putin's way, and without a land bridge to the Crimea, it will all have been for nothing.

Poor Putin. He should have offered Ukraine a $50Billion trade deal instead of the messily $15Billion. Too late now.

Doing nothing will start WWIII. Early action prevents a worse outcome later.  How do you handle a bully? Let him grow?

But Obama can't do it.  A real leader could threaten Putin and Putin would consider.  Obama threatens, and Putin knows it means nothing.

Threaten Putin? Most of the US public (Including you) couldn't locate Ukraine on the map, much less send their sons to fight and die for it. Especially since we are weary and weak from fighting over a decade in a meaningless war in Iraq, also under the auspices of "Showing strength". So no.

What Obama is doing is very smart. Keep diplomatic channels open, while quietly moving military assets to the region.
