bigworld2000: How can this happen?  How could the parents at least not have tried to retrace the girls' route?  How could no one have seen that car in the creek?

The drought that came through in 2012 dried up a lot of creeks and/or lowered the water levels to a point that you could see things that would not have been obvious for years. Not to mention this state has a LOT of land with little-to-no population and/or no traffic. Combine those factors and it's possible. Hell, I have only lived here for almost two years now and I can see how it would be real easy to hide a body around here.

Not to put too fine a point on it but the exact purpose of a search is to discover that which is not obvious. It sounds to me like the police were convinced they "had their man" and so didn't even look for any alternative. The fact that in the long run it turned out they they were correct on his character doesn't excuse the poor detective work. The fact remains that the thick heads of the police caused the girl's family much unnecessary pain.

Easily. If there was a consensus that they were abducted and/or killed by somebody, why would they look for a car in a creek?

Look at the folks jailed for crimes they did not commit: The real criminals went unnoticed. A box is checked, the media and community are appeased, the court assigns guilt, and police stop looking. And all this can happen with no ill-will intended.

Happens all the time in science and engineering too: Someone finds a good way to do something, and nobody ever looks for anything better or different-- for a variety of reasons.

There is a much more in-depth story about the whole situation here. It sounds like the cops kind of assumed that the girls had run off to the big city, so they didn't look all that hard. There were several searches conducted over the years, but for some reason the creek that was about half a mile from where they were known to be heading was never searched thoroughly. All of the people who were involved in the investigation are dead, so they're not answering any questions. The father of one of the girls died just days before the car was found, so he went to his grave never knowing what happened to his daughter. It's a sad story all the way around.

Geotpf: kid_icarus: A forensic pathologist confirmed skeletal remains found in the car are consistent with being from two different people.

Note the two individual skulls, most likely originating from different skeletal structures. This almost certainly suggests two separate bodies.

I suspect all that was left was very small bone fragments.

/yeah, yeah, you were being snarky

That's usually the case. Identifying the number of individuals, their sexes, and their ages usually involves taking the remains and laying them out on a tarp for analysis near the recovery site. If the remains are fragmentary or incomplete (common in cases like this one), that could take an hour or two (or longer). If you can't use a screen to shield that analysis from the press or lookie lous, you put them in a body bag and take them to the lab and do all of that stuff there so that the next of kin don't see their decomposed daughters on the news. Someone with forensic training will probably have a good idea of what's going on in the field pretty quickly, but it's ultimately up to law enforcement to make announcements to the press and public, which can take additional time.

Bell told Division of Criminal Investigation agents in 2004 that she had thought the girls ran away. She later recounted more details after relaxation therapy sessions with a state psychologist.
"I had put that all behind me. I had not thought about it since they disappeared," Bell told defense attorney Clint Sargent.

In other news, "relaxation therapy" is bullshiat.

I hope their parents are still alive to finally get closure! If there is one thing worst than losing a love one is never knowing what happened to them.

IIRC there was a fark story a year or 2 ago about the drought in Europe and how the low rivers exposed an old WW2 German ship.

It's South Duhkota. The "Forensic Pathologist" is probably a first year medical student from USD getting paid minimum wage. The car laid there because the first traffic in 42 years passed by and noticed the car.

What if he only committed those rapes years later because he was accused for the rape and murder of the recently found? Was always talked about behind his back? The locals always giving him weird looks,
/Told you're bad for a long time, might as well be bad since you're getting blamed anyways...

Actually not uncommon here in Floriduh due to all of the canals and swampland. Have a few beers and drive too fast, usually after dark, and you end up underwater in a muddy canal. You "vanish" until the water drops or the canal gets drained and then, "Ta Da!" There you be.

Reminds me of a similar story down here in OK, there was a Fark thread but I too lazy to link.  TWO cars were found at the end of a boat ramp.  They disappeared a couple of years apart from each other back in the late 60's early 70's to only to be found by a couple of guys testing some new sonar equipment.

Unless you know definitely where someone may have gone it appears to be a crap shoot as to weather you will find them.
