My sophomore year we were kickin' back one afternoon at the pad and my dad just burst in through the door.

Unfortunately we were passing the space-time bong around just at that moment.

Damn that was awkward.

jaybeezey: charlesmartel11235: astouffer: So glad guns are illegal and murder is down. Oh wait its not. This a cultural issue here. Kids raised to respect nobody and take what they want when they feel like it. No amount of laws or money is going to solve this.

When you say kids you're really saying black kids right

If you see "kids" and in your head that turns into "black kids", you're the racist.

Sorry, but it's true. Not because of color, but because of demographics and poverty levels.

city full of savages acting like savages. Why is this such a big shock?

Pichu0102: Imagine how awkward it would be if said dad saw stacks of college books in your room, and it turns out that the reason for the poor grades was an undiagnosed and untreated learning disability.

So you're saying that Chicago is retarded?

robodog: It continued to decline in 2010, 2011 was flat with 2010, 2012 saw a spike, and 2013 saw a decline to the lowest level since 1962. Chicago really only looks bad compared to other cities where the rates have fallen more quickly, overall it's significantly safer than it's been in decades just like almost every other American city.

So there's no need to heed Emanuel's call for the feds to do more. It's a statistical anomaly, nothing to see here.

Huh.  Because money and laws and better policing have caused the murder rate to drop in pretty much every other major city in this country except Chicago.

Really?

Notice how that stops halfway through 2010?

CPD cooked the murder stats for last year.

http://www.chicagomag.com/Chicago-Magazine/May-2014/Chicago-crime-ra te s/

Point is that the murder rate has leveled out over the past few years, largely due to the botching of the federal gang sting 4 years back. Most places in the country have a dropping murder rate. Chicago's has evened out.

*Giggle giggle giggle* It "only looks bad compared to other cities." You sound like someone that lives in the ghetto and has convinced themselves that it's perfectly normal.

Nope, I live in a bedroom suburb of Cleveland where the only murders are the result of a domestic disturbance and happen maybe twice a decade. The decline in homicide rates in basically every major city in the US for basically my entire life goes counter to the sotry the media is selling but the stats don't lie, violent crime is going down, not up. The problem for the 'news' outlets is that coverage of local violent crimes is one of the few things they do 'better' than all the other sources of information available for free online so every day it's going to be fearmongering about how dangerous the world is despite the statistical realities of the situation.

Teens, unruly teens or flash mobs is usually indicative and one need not view the video or mug shot if it happens to accompany the story to hazard a guess.

So what are people's views on Chicago? It's on my short list of places to move to. I want to move somewhere where there is museums, aquariums, etc. Lots of culture and good food. But some place where cost of living isn't outragous. This list also includes Atlanta and Hartford among others.

No opinion on Chicago, but some other cities you might consider if you haven't already...

Charlotte
Minneapolis
Nashville
Norfolk
Pittsburgh
Raleigh/Durham
St. Louis

redmid17: Lsherm: Since last year, Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Illinois' two U.S. senators and others have called on federal law enforcement to do more to combat violence in Chicago.

Why is it the feds' problem that Chicago can't get their shiat together?  Are these all mob murders?

Around 90% of them are gang-related (either gang shooter or gang victim). Plenty of the gangs (Latin Kings, Gangster Disciples, Los Zetas) engage in crimes the FBI (or DEA, ATF, et al) investigates. The problem is most of these shootings are a bit lower on the ladder than the FBI would normally investigate. The last time Chicago and Feds collaborated on large scale gang crackdowns, it grabbed all the top dogs and a lot of intermediary leaders. That lead the gangs to splinter and fight for territory, a balkanization if you will.

If your claim about 90% of them being gang related is true then should we punish law abiding gun owners with more restrictive gun laws that will have absolutely zero affect on 90% of the gun crime?
Because that is what has been going on in Chicago and other major Democratic run cities for at least the last 30 years.

Thank you. I have heard a lot of good things about Charlotte. I will look at these cities. I am done with my Bachelors in Healthcare Administration in September. I will have about seven years experience when I am done so I am hoping for good things.

No I don't think Chicago should pass any more restrictive laws. They will get struck down in court again and Chicago will owe more money to courts. I'd also like to be able to pick up some ammo in the city limits.

TheOther: fusillade762: One of the theories for the drop in crime during the 90s was legalized abortion, so you're not really too far off.

Sure, if you legalize MURDERING CHILDREN, crime statistics go down.

OMFG I'm channeling Hannity....I need an exorcism, stat!

When I am Benevolent Dictator, there will be a free abortion clinic on every street corner. We'll have an Elysian utopia within 8 years.

/Mandatory sex education, mandatory birth control for all until age 22. Watch young men and women get educations, and start their adult lives off without being in financial servitude just because they fulfilled their natural biological urges.

As someone who started my family when I was 21 and the wife was 19 (almost 20) fark you very much. I've never taken any public assistance, have no debt but my house (and at 35 my first new car), and contribute to my community in both time and monetary donations. I had no desire to be raising kids when I was old like some of my friends parents who were more walking ATMs than true participants in their childs lives, I want to be out there hiking trails and riding the raft with them, and that's what I'm doing.

What would you do if you were in Emanuel's.  Keep the current policies?

Taxpayers in all 49 other states need to pay more $$$ so that Rahm and the CPD can waste it? An, no.

Not until after we were engaged and had had a talk about our plans for our family =) We agreed to have one right away and the other one once we could afford a house.
