Yeah, it's one thing to cross at 1000 yards... it's another to close at supersonic speeds while lighting them up with your fire control. That's when the headline reads: "Pair of Russian aircraft shot down by American Destroyer after aggressive actions."

Oh, it's noteworthy, but it's not shocking or terrifying.

"Buzzing" a ship is dangerous, asinine, stupid, and would get a pilot punished if he did it to his own people.  Doing it to a foreign vessel is like having a large gang of Guidos standing outside of a neighborhood grocery store loudly making racist jokes that target the races of the people entering the store.  Not illegal, not directly threatening, yet clearly meant to threaten and intimidate.

Russia has been doing this occasionally for over a decade.  Not constantly, but they've been doing it off and on since by or before the War on Terror.  (I can't remember the first incident).  This is another incident in the continuing list of ways Russia is rattling sabers and being belligerent.  It should be filed and logged and used against Russia during diplomatic arguments.

Lolz.  Air forces have been doing this for as long as they've had fuel enough to get them over-water to where the ships are.  You can't remember the first incident because you weren't born then.   If you are in international water, there is absolutely *nothing* to use against anyone.  Their planes have exactly as much right to be there as our ships.

This is an absolute non-event.

TFA starts off with an SU-27s and ends with two Su-24s and I think they were both stock photos.  I don't think we know what really flew by.

Given the press demand for accuracy, I'd guess it was probably a Tu-95 that went through editing like this:  "It's a fighter jet!  I think it's an AK-47!"

I've noticed a little bit of that myself.

It reminds me of the Usenet discussions during the Hainan Island incident.  Whole bunch of people who used stilted English arguing that the US was the aggressor and even that the large, lumbering EP-3 somehow caused the incident by attacking the PLAN fighter, which is ludicrous.

I just wonder if there's some reason why they didn't crank that AN/SPY radar up to 11 and fry every circuit in that thing.

Quite honestly, though, it wasn't all that rare in the Cold War for either side to buzz ships if they were near territorial waters (at least, that's how I understand it). The whiny press release about it being "unprofessional" just seems silly, better to just say "Yeah, they're showboating... we don't really care, we just don't want them to screw up and hit something expensive."

CIWIS automation is pretty primitive.  You turn it on, and it kills everything it sees until it runs out of ammunition.   It's also a point defense weapon designed to guard against inbound missile attack.  It's not really an air defense weapon.   If it gets turned on, the shiat has long since hit the fan.

It's an idiotic viewpoint.  Forget that for eighty plus years churches were demolished or repurposed as other things and religion forcibly removed from the public sphere.  Presently, Putin rarely encourages the Christians left in the country, and when he does it's usually just to provide some balance against the Muslim separatists in the South.  Presently, 71% of the country does identify as Christian, but only 5% consider themselves observant.

We weren't testing the Soviet's defenses.

It was an airliner off course in the days before GPS was invented.  And the Soviets had shot down other way-ward airliners in the past.

And of course, they found the aircraft, recovered the black boxes and everything.  Had there been any actual evidence of a spy mission, like special radio receivers or cameras, they would have trumpeted it to the World.  But they didn't.

Hell, even the physics of their explanation of satellite orbits of the SIGINT satellites they say were part of the whole evil capitalist plan to spy on them was laughably wrong.

Oh, and I know a bit about the BURNING WIND and OLYMPIC GAME recon flights in those areas, and even back then they didn't overfly Soviet territory, not after the U-2 downing.

dready zim: So the USA was very close to russia with warships and complains that russia was flying its planes, close to russia, around the american ships?

The US was in International waters, and Russia decided to do something that is inherently dangerous.

Perspective, indeed.

Ever notice how the US doesn't do that - and never did that in the Cold War, even with Russian ships near OUR coast?

I'm sorry, but people seem to have this idea that this is how we'd react to people near us, as if it never happened on a regular farking basis during the Cold War. And you know what? Same thing happened back then. They'd light up our ships with fire control radar, we'd keep sailing and not return the favor. For one thing, it's dangerous. For another, we gather data on them and they get nothing from us.

No matter HOW you look at this, this kind of thing is "smartless" of the Russians.

Alright. Show me a time any US planes did this to another nation's vessels and NOT catch a ton of sh*t from the International Community for it? Back in the 80's a pair of Libyan MIGs jumped a pair of USAF planes, and even though the Libyan planes were clearly in the wrong (and the MIGs got splashed, of course), the US still had to defend it's actions in the UN. Thankfully it had cockpit video to back up it's story.
