Don't get involved unless you are a) willing to dedicate a lot, A LOT, of time to the game, or b) you are fine with labeled derogatory terms. It takes a lot of time to get good skills, equipment, and access and to be well-regarded for them.

It's not that multiplayer games are bad (most of my gaming time is divided between TF2 and DotA), but there are way too many games that should be single player that have a multiplayer component attached to them.  Why does Sim City require an internet connection?

Your EVE FC was pretty farking stupid to say that. The reality is you were giving your whole fleet HIV, which is the virus that causes AIDS. You can't just give your fleet AIDS. It doesn't work like that and your EVE FC is a degenerate farking retard for suggesting otherwise.

I have avoided any kind of interaction with other players on the vast majority of games I play because of this (and I avoid MMOs on the whole for this and other reasons). However I did actually find a tiny little MMO that I enjoy playing where almost all the people on the server are actually... Normal. No slurs, very little douchebaggery of any kind, and when it does happen, people just talk around the person doing it.

I like it, but it's so different from my experience that I'm always a bit weirded out by how... nice it all is...

I think we need to distinguish 'on-line' casual games from RPG/deep story games.

e.g. "World of Tanks" is an online game.   But it is just log-on, battle, get credits XP, get better tanks, etc.  The only interaction is a in-battle chat window that you can turn off if you want.  Sure there's trash talk, but no battle is more than 15 minutes long an I've not seen anyone keeping a memory of who said what in later battles.

Things like WoW or EVE I expect have a much deeper level of personal interaction, and hence, more opportunity for getting wound-up about perceived insults etc.

Incommunicative noob here: I've learned not to talk to anybody. It's come from lots of experience.

Look I've tried talking to people, but first and foremost they tell me how terrible I am. (Hi everybody, I'm bad at video games and I don't give a shiat. You're 14 and you're tired of my shiat. But I'm in a newbie area and that's what it's for. You're a 40yo quadriplegic and you play this all day to keep from going crazy, I don't.)

That's another thing. Players' egos are alarmingly bound up in which game they play. As if that choice marks them as a superior member of the larger MMO-players community.

Back in the days when I was playing a lot of Q3A/QuakeLive I felt a small sense of accomplishment the first time someone accused me of hacking.  That meant I was starting to get good enough to compete with the big boys.

Actually got told by several people I had the potential to play it competitively, but never could bring myself to put the time and effort into it.  Once it gets past a certain point it becomes more like a job than a game, and I play games for fun.

I've been harassed and threatened with violence online, but what really bothered me was the poor spelling and grammar.  If someone is going to insult and/or threaten me, at least take the time to proofread what is written.  How hard is that?

I'm not a grammar Nazi but I feel there needs to be better focus on construction of sentences.

I play female avatars (game devs typically give female avatars better fashion choices), but if guys bother me I casually bring up that I have a horrible cocaine addiction. 99% of the guys get confused and disoriented like a stun grenade just went off and stop talking to you while they try to comprehend just what happened.

The 1% that don't leave you alone are typically pretty interesting enough to keep as friends.

Avoid the general chat, don't take anything personally and you'll be fine.  Join a guild that caters to new players, they exist.

Rift's /4 is almost as bad as WoW's Barrens' chat.  The discussions between factions are bad since the factions share a general chat on PvE servers.

In the past I've seen multiple secret service worthy threats on Rift when they first went F2P. Not for a while though, as they tend to get banned really, REALLY quickly.   We just have the run of the mill people bragging about their drug use, and random conspiracy theories now.

My wife plays MMOs with me occasionally, and she's yet to receive this extra attention from people.  Maybe it varies from server to server and MMO to MMO.

Alternatively, I just assume the other person I am playing with is male until they correct me or state otherwise, but gender rarely comes up anyways.

Sorry ladies.  I know you play MMOs and many of you can kick male ass quite handily.  It's safer to assume it's a guy on the other end, as women (in my experience) get less upset at being assumed to be the opposite sex for some reason than men.

Gaming wasn't serious. Games were fun. Deciding what games to spend limited pocket money on was serious. (Thank you Mastertronic, Gremlin and Firebird). Arguing over ZX Spectrum v. Commodore 64 v. Amstrad CPC* or Amiga v. Atari ST** was serious. But when you actually sat down to play the games, that was pure joy.

I'm the same way. I figured, it's good but not good enough for subscription fees. Either they improve it or they drop the subscription fee and I'll play it, otherwise go with a clearly better MMO like WoW or GW2.

I do this in single player games, but in MMOs I stopped.  Got too annoying/weird to have random players assume I was a girl and treat me as such.  Not negative treatment, they'd just gave me far more attention than my male players ever received.  I didn't realize how many players still assume that female avatar = female gamer.

I am a female, play with female avatars, and then get told there's no way I'm a girl because my voice isn't girly enough. When I play with male avatars I get told I sound like a biatch because they assume I'm a dude. Just can't effing win!

We call this the 13-year old boy effect.  I've seriously had trouble differentiating girls from some younger men.  The maturity level usually corrects the problem.  Usually only takes about 30 seconds of actual conversation to sort them.

Rift's /4 is almost as bad as WoW's Barrens' chat.  The discussions between factions are bad since the factions share a general chat on PvE servers.

Rift's PVP servers are so sparse they have to cross group with the PVE servers for battlegrounds.  Partially because so many PVP people got suspended and they also have a feature that once you reach a certain number of people ignoring you, you can type your chats, but you have a global mute applied to your account for a while.

You still get a few flagging though to harass newbs in the starter zones.

Rift balances it with a general buff if you are undergeared or under leveled compared to some base level expectation of gear stats.  It's not a huge buff, but it levels the playing field a bit.

I'd rather play an FPS for my PVP fix though than an RPG MMO. Quake 3 was great back in the day, even Quake with the mods you could get.

Planetside 2 was fun for a while, but I didn't have the time necessary to actually practice with a group and learn the tactics you need to win.

Plus everyone looks pretty much the same, so I'd get shot  by (and do my fair share of shooting of) my own faction a lot.

Being a medic was actually fun in that game though.

For some reason = because everyone else is probably guys. No big deal.

I don't know what the thing is about some women though. Like your wife, I play female characters and never get chat up or treated like "Oh wow a girl is talking!". I've never quite understood why, since sometimes I could use an extra gift or two in game. :P Some women are obviously "have I mentioned I'm a GIRL today??!", and that's pretty clear-cut. But other women act perfectly normally and get the nice treatment. It's puzzling. I'm not broken up about it, just curious.

Haven't played it yet, I was looking forward to the game.  What I've seen complaints about online is, you go into a dungeon.  Most of the loot is in random chests that you need lockpicks for, which is fine.  Problem is, it's really ALL the loot...even bosses drop crap, compared to the standard chests, which drop rares, etc.  And the REAL problem is, the loot in the chests isn't player-tagged, so whoever pops the chest can get all the loot.

So it's really easy to grief ...join a PUG, avoid the mobs, steal ALL the good loot, while they fight.  The griefer's party can get upset, and boot him...but here's the last straw...he isn't booted from their dungeon, and they can't bring in a new guy to replace him until HE decides to leave.

Actually, I liked that aspect of it.  Help on raids, free gear, etc.  Hell, you don't even have to communicate half the time. Them just being near a "girl" is enough for them.

It's also a sense of style thing though, a lot of guys in RPG's are anime twink bait looking, or charicature "masculine" that are ridiculous, hell, the females are often more badass.  I've played several games where the males were outright feminine and whiny and the females were the strong independant types.

Female models also tend to be a bit smaller, like in some FPS games, so when someone's picking a target it's usually the bigger guy as it's an easier target(even if it's just a subconscious thing to the attacker and the hitboxes are the same sizes).

It sounds pretty cool, being able to interact with everyone in real-time as you're going.  But it also makes him flip his lid in anger and frustration.

This I attribute to what it's like to play a game with or against actual people.  They are SO friggin unpredictable.  Many moons ago, when playing against others online was in its infancy (I'll use Dawn of Aces as a reference point - look it up.)  I thought I was pretty good.  Playing against the AI players, I could fly really well and kill the hell out of them.  First time I went on with other people, I found that everyone either sucked so bad, it was no fun, or they were SO friggin good, I thought they must be cheating.

Anyway... In those days, a little chat window was all you really had for interaction.  If you wanted to actually speak live with someone, you had to have a live phone call going on, which wasn't easy as the phone line was always tied up by the modem.

Game-rage is like road-rage. The problem is that you see cars or avatars, not people. So you get irrationally angry because you can't receive many communication cues from the other drivers/players. Thus, you tend to assume the worst about them because you can't really tell. It dehumanizes everyone.

the first time i chose to play a female character for aesthetic reasons was vampire the masquerade bloodlines because the male models were too large and goofy looking in 3rd person.

since then, I've noticed in 3rd person views, female characters are often smaller, which means you see more of the game.

then, to reference the other guy, if i'm staring at an ass all day, may as well be female.

but, for 1st person games, i don't care about gender.  i don't really care about aesthetics, since none of that matters

Honestly, I've seen all types: The fawners, the haters, the quest-time masturbators, and the normal folks that just want to play the game. "Mute" is a beautiful thing sometimes. Usually it's those of the undescended testes that argue that I can't be a girl and usually after I've kicked their asses or done well. I think, maybe, it's a case of being butthurt by being beaten by a girl so if they pretend I'm a teenage guy like them, they're still manly men in their minds. Regardless, that crap is why I rarely talk with other players and online game a lot less. That crap gets old after awhile and ruins the whole experience.

llortcM_yllort: Aidan: I have avoided any kind of interaction with other players on the vast majority of games I play because of this (and I avoid MMOs on the whole for this and other reasons).

That's how I felt about MechWarrior Online.

And how I still feel about Titanfall. I came expecting the juvenile COD crowd, and instead I got either pure politeness, or silence.

Yeah, I know a few guys who really rage about being out DPS'd by a girl in a raid or think that one of our spots belongs to them because we're only giving the girl a token spot. Even funnier are morons who are actually able to pull high DPS, but can't seem to avoid fight mechanics and rail against both guys and girls that understand being alive is more valuable than pulling high DPS and dying early.

That happened to me too. Random strangers would lavish me with gifts. It was creepy.

I do recall, humorously, that a female elf I played with one time ended up being a guy with a thick Texas drawl.

I've had this happen in reverse; I'm a guy playing a guy; yet I meet dozens of people who cannot be dissuaded from the notion I'm a girl playing a guy character. Bizzare.

To do a team right, you have to be there for the full match, or series of matches, or raid, etc.

But now I find I have gaming time in small, irregular chunks. If the wife or kids need help, I'm disconnecting -right then.

So, because I don't want to mess up other people's games, I tend to stick to single player. That's why I'm disillusioned with games like MWO and Titanfall.

Games with no single player feel incomplete. I know I'm a single data point, but I will never buy another pvp only game.

I'm in the same boat.   I play an MMO, but I don't group much, and if I pvp it's a PUG and as long as you aren't AFK-ing, you're fine.  Hit the level cap though in Rift and since you need to group up to progress, well, I'm playing it less.

FTL, Path of Exile for the Diablo fix (don't like D3 even with the new patch removing the AH), Skyrim.

I also got the platformer Humble Bundle a few weeks back, that's been loads of fun (mostly).

SWTOR does this pretty well. In PvP battlegrounds, everyone's intrinsic stats are boosted to the same level, so lvl 15s can compete with lvl 28s. You don't have all the leveled abilities, which is the reason to level, but the stats are pretty well equalized.

Back on topic: Videogames were invented so people could have fun WITHOUT HAVING TO FIND SOMEBODY ELSE TO PLAY WITH.  Stop ruining them by making having friends mandatory.  You don't need to be old to appreciate the benefits of not having to deal with other people.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
I do agree with you to a point.  I really like a good multiplayer game but I'm a little sad if there's no single player component.  It's not a deal breaker for me but I do like a single player experience.  However, gaming is always evolving and I think saying that games "should be this" or "shouldn't be that" invites stagnation.

pute kisses like a man: since then, I've noticed in 3rd person views, female characters are often smaller, which means you see more of the game

That's another aspect I never took into consideration, but when there's a slider for height, I always use the tiny ones.

noitsnot: This was the deal in Quake / Quakeworld - the female model was harder to see if far down a corridor, or camping in a shadow, etc.

All the same rules of perception apply in video games, the bigger it is, the easier it is to see or notice motion(in the more modern realistic shooters(ie where there's wilderness and ruins.. a lot of it is about noticing motion).

That's one thing I dug about some of the(previous) CoD's, you can hide in bushes and such, as long as you're not moving much.

/much more realistic than, say, the early Halo's.
//Yeah, CoD sucks, but I like that I can play it the way I would paintball in the woods, when I was less of a lazy bastard

DOTA and other MOBA communities are the absolute worst. LoL's gotten better thanks to the tribunal and them dropping the banhammer on some of the most toxic players, but its still not great. The origonal DOTA mod for WCIII though...

"You're mother should have aborted you"
"You are literally worse then Hitler. You should kill yourself. Right now. I'm being serious."
"Quit being such a Jew or I'll gas you."
"Nibong, quit. Your crack baby mama needs you."
"I WILL TRACK YOUR IP RAPE AND KILL YOU YOU!"

Lets just say that it not the most welcoming of communities to new players.

Duane Dibbley: walktoanarcade: There's no way in Bowser's lava I would have been able to beat Ninja Gaiden back in 1989 had some farktwit been screaming unfunny yo mamma jokes randomly into my ear.

In fact, back in the 1980s and '90s, such behavior was grounds for a punch in the face. We took our gaming fairly seriously back then too.

* Commodore of course. Legendary game music and if you had a disc drive you could play astonishing and ambitious disc-only games as well as the ones ported to or from the others.

Summer games on C64 was epic.  The whole freaking neighborhood showed up to see who could win and break another joystick.
