To be fair, if there's one team you don't ever want to underestimate, it's Detroit.

I love the Wings, but this is not the Wings team of the late 90's or 2000's.  Their stars are old and the young guys are rather meh.  It's what happens when you draft at the bottom for so long.  I don't think they'll get past Boston, but I hope they can give them a good fight.

True.

But without Zetterberg and having Datsuyk gone so long, pretty much everyone wrote the Wings off for making the playoffs. But then THE NYQUIST goes berserk and the team just finds ways to win.

Your point is valid, but Detroit can always surprise.

I wouldn't underestimate them...that's true.  But this isn't the great team it was.  They had a phenomenal run for so many years...it was inevitable that they'd slide backwards.  I was just happy they made the playoffs.

It's the Playoffs - every team brings their A game. Better to go up against a team with a healthy dose of respect and a good idea what they are going to throw against you than to cruse in and try and sail by. The Red Wings will have the Bruins on their guard from game 1.

I expect this series to go 7 games. Boston loves playing 7 game series. They've probably played more of them than any other team in the last four years.

Said it in the other thread: the First Round always makes me nervous, because the ranking are thrown out the window, and the Bruins have had issues being a one-and-done team in the past.

They have? The only time they've gone one and done since this current team was put together was the year after they won the Stanley Cup.

He's got a perfectly good reason.   The Wings are much better than their 8th place finish implies, and few teams can royally fark up a playoff run quite like the Bruins.

I defend the Panthers usually, I attend their games even when the Bs aren't in town etc.

But those assbags laid the egg so C-Bus could get the seven seed.

Yeah, well, last year they were 50 seconds from being one and done.

I hate being right. I predicted the MIller trade was bad, and lo and behold Miller has sucked as a Blues goalie. Maybe he will get hot in the playoff, but I doubt it. Four and out.

I will say I'm feeling very uneasy about the Bs playing the Wings.

They haven't played particularly well against them this year. I would really hate for the Bruins not to make the ECFs after having won that dirty-slut that is the Presidents trophy.

It's the playoffs, anything can happen.  I'd be uneasy about any matchup because all it takes is a hot goalie, a flukey goal or a coach implementing a simple but effective system and a whole series gets turned on its ear.

Miller isn't the problem - it's that dumpster fire of a defense and the lack of forwards that can walk, talk and dress themselves right now.

Before they won the Cup in 2011:

2009-10 Lost NHL Conference Semi-Finals
2008-09 Lost NHL Conference Semi-Finals
2007-08 Lost NHL Conference Quarter-Finals
2006-07 Did not make Playoffs

2003-04 Lost NHL Conference Quarter-Finals
2002-03 Lost NHL Conference Quarter-Finals
2001-02 Lost NHL Conference Quarter-Finals

1999-00 Did not make Playoffs
1998-99 Lost NHL Conference Semi-Finals

1993-94 Lost NHL Conference Semi-Finals
1992-93 Lost NHL Division Semi-Finals
Yeah, you can say "but the years they lost in the Conference Semi-Finals, they had a First Round win". I'll give you that. Beforehand, it was '92 before they won two rounds in a single playoff.

They have been on a roll lately, so Boston better not take them lightly. I as a Pens fan am glad to see our opponent is Columbus. Better odds at beating them since we swept them in the regular season. Of course they better not let their guard down either since anything can happen in the Playoffs.

The Wings young guys are dynamic and can out skate any team.  There are times they can play keep-away for five minutes at a stretch.  The Wings have a potent offense even without Zetterberg and Datsuyk.  Where they are weak is on the blue line.  They give the puck away too easily in their own end.  There are 5 minute stretches where the Wings defense can't get the puck over the blue line.

As you should be.

The Wings, as big of a fan as I am, I had written off about midseason when half of the team was out due to injury. Zetterberg and Datsyuk both out. :/ At least Dats is back. Helm too.

Somehow, someway, the youthful talent has come of age and really stepped up and are playing like superstars. If we get some decent goaltending, I think the speed of this team could pull an upset.

/never thought I'd say 23 and counting this year.

Speaking as the only decorated Nuclear Hockeystician in this thread, I can tell you that from vast experience in the field and from the volume of peer reviewed journals I've written, that whomever scores the most goals has a better chance of winning the series.

In addendum, I also predict Chara gets annoyed with Justin Abdelkader quickly and attempts to eat him sometime by the third game.

That's true of anyone in a 2 vs 3 matchup.  I mean for God's sake, look at the Sharks.  Their road is LA, then Anaheim, then StLouis/Chicago/Colorado.  Winning your division unexpectedly became HUGELY important this year.  So good job Blues, way to go.

The SJS vs LAK matchup is going to be brutal and I can't wait to watch every game as a mostly impartial observer.

It was all lining-up perfectly. A friend of mine is a Wings fan and he and his wife were going to come over to the house and have dinner and drinks and watch the game. Now that's farked. Not to mention Saturday is my, "wake-up hungover from Friday night, proceed to make my way to the bar at noon" rinse and repeat weekly drunk-a-thon.
