(Vice)   Japan introduces its largest warship since WW II, claims it's a destroyer even though it looks like a carrier. Naturally China has a problem with this   (motherboard.vice.com ) divider line
More: Interesting, Japan, nuclear-powered aircraft carrier, Shinzo Abe, destroyers, largest ships

Well, Mr Grumpypants China, if you stop giving them reasons to beef up their military...

Seriously, China, did you 'really' think the US wouldn't use Japan to counter your growing militaristic approach to your neighbors?

Oh, and here's a preemptive strike: No, the Chinese will not force us to rein in Japan because they hold massive amounts of our debt.  They hold about 16% of our debt and about 60% of 'their' foreign investments are in American dollar-denominated holdings.

In simple speak, this mean that the Chinese have no real hold over the American economy and if our dollar gets in trouble, their economy is in deep shiat.

Yeah, I love it when people run around in circles waving their arms yelling "OMGZ Chinese investment!!!  Massive holdings!!!  EVERYBODY PANIC!!!"  China hasn't taken over the US economy.  They've joined themselves to it at the hip.

Japanese school children have worn naval type uniforms for a while.  I bet they could ramp up a full blown military in less than 10 years.

Anyone else think it's B.S. that Japan was deprived a military, but the white folks in Germany weren't? And somehow still today they aren't allowed one. If they want to piss away billions of dollars on defense spending like other jack-hole nations, let 'em.

It had nothing to do with 'white' and everything to do with 'communism'.

I think think they are overplaying its threat rather than diminishing it. Helicopter carriers are less a threat than modern destroyers.

An Arleigh Burke-class destroyer would, well, destroy, a WWII battleship in a fight.

Specifically "communism at your border".

Japan had no military threat comparable to the Soviets.

Since this is Japanese, that means the ship has one (or more) of the following features:

1) Transforms into a giant robot.
2) I armed with a massive energy cannon capable of destroying cities in a single blast
3) Is a doorway to an alternate dimension that is populated by tentacle monsters
4) Will be used to fight Godzilla
5) Is crewed entirely by women that have cat ears, big eyes, small mouths, and are all psychotic

I think China should be more worried about those features than anything else.

Well if that's the argument then Japan should have been allowed a military when China went Communist and buddied up to the U.S.S.R.

I think the stronger argument is that Germany never directly attacked the US.   It is punishment for Pearl Harbor

Only as long as it could stay outside of gun range.

Warships today aren't armored like they used to be. Either ship could wreck the other with one hit - it's simply a matter of range and speed.

It's just a helicopter carrier.  Without the catapult and arresting gear systems, it's unable to launch and retrieve any serious strike and support aircraft.  No AWACs, no in-flight refueling planes and no cargo planes, nothing except small VTOL aircraft and choppers.

In case you didn't know, Japan's military is barred from sending troops outside the country. That's why they call their military the Self-Defense Force. Not like they did it as a good will gesture after the war; we rewrote their Constitution with that proviso in it. Same for Germany. People in this country get all pissy when Germany and Japan didn't send troops to help out in Iraq and Afghanistan without realizing they are not allowed to. Someone with a better grasp of the history will correct/add to this.

No doubt this carrier destroyer will self-defend the shiat out of the Senkaku Islands. If WW III doesn't start in Syria or Iran, that's the next spot for things to blow up.

I think, at the time, that had something to do with national character.  Germany wasn't completely made up of Nazis, they were just the ones running things--and keeping everyone else in line through fear.  Once the Nazis were rooted out, most of the Germans left were just regular people.

Japan, on the other hand, was still highly nationalistic.  This wasn't just a ruling class, but a society where people still fell on their swords as a consequence of failure, where people believed so completely in their absolute superiority over the rest of humanity that they took to the battlefield intending to throw their lives away without ever firing a shot just to take a few of the enemy with them.  Their surrender was unthinkable.   Remember, this is the reason why the allies used the bomb; if they hadn't, they'd have paid in blood for every inch of Japan's mainland.  Giving them back an offensive military would be a whole lot less certain to be safe for their neighbors.
