That's disappointing - the only decent thing that came out of the first Rio film was the Angry Birds edition. The kiddo has never been interested in watching it again.

Winter Soldier, on the other hand, is easily the best Marvel flick outside of IM1 and Avengers.

Oculus looks pretty good, but I like semi-cheesy horror movies. Still plan to see it.

I don't know if I'd really call $12 million underwhelming for Oculus, since the budget was $5 million. I'm sure the director and studio are actually thrilled with this performance because they had realistic expectations. #3 really isn't bad considering how big the #1 and #2 movies were this weekend. It's not going to be a The Conjuring style hit, but it will give the studio a tidy profit in the end if it can pull in at least $20-$30 million in the entire run, plus home media sales and TV rights.

I didn't see any movies this weekend. Though this coming one I might go see Transcendence.

Empty H: Because a majority if people have taste?

You mean a majority of people at the theater I was at?
I didn't want to subject myself to a children's cartoon even though the 1st Rio was cute, had already seen CA2 and had no desire to see a movie about the sadness that is the Cleveland Browns.
Divergent was the only sci fi themed movie on this weekend, so you're saying that Sci Fi fans have no taste?

It's been out a few weeks now.

I loved Oculus. It's a solid horror flick that relies on atmosphere, story, and performances. I respect that.

There is no reason to see Draft Day if you're not a football fan. It's not unpleasant or anything, but I simply could not care about what was happening in the movie. It's...meh.

I skipped Rio 2.

The numbers must have been updated because Cap appears to be winning the weekend now.

The majority I was speaking of was in reference to the country, not just your area.

Trying to say I was speaking about science fiction fans in particular is trying to put words in my mouth.

True. While Rio won Friday cap is winning the weekend. This makes me happy.

I'd rank Captain America: The Winter Soldier equal to Iron Man 1 and slightly better then the Avengers

/ all of these are really good, IMHO
// too bad DC Comics-based movies can't seem to get their act together (aside from the Nolan directed-Batman films, of course)

I'm sitting in a half full theater for Capt America at 11 am on a Sunday. It being number 2 is a little surprising.

Going to see Cap again on Tuesday with two friends who have not seen it yet.  Will refrain from spoilers for their sake.

And the best movie of the weekend didn't crack the top 10.  Oh well, Raid 2 will shine on DVD.

2014-04-13 03:07:41 PM

taxandspend: According to BoxOfficeMojo.com:

1. Captain America: The Winter Soldier - $41,398,000
2. Rio 2 - $39,000,000
3. Oculus - $12,000,000
4. Draft Day - $9,750,000
5. Divergent - $7,500,000

I guess making sure your headline is first is much more important than making sure your headline is accurate.

Was somebody told?

Apparently no one wants to see a movie about the Browns, either.

I heard it was totally unrealistic anyway. The Browns won 8 games and that just strains credulity.

Saw Rio 2 and Mr Peabody at the drive-in last night. Meh.
Before, the kids were all excited about Rio......after it was all about quoting lines from Peabody.

Oculus played out its premise to its logical conclusion. People just need to remember when you are dealing with a demonic object that can completely control your perception of reality don't spend your time, while the mirror is weak, feeding it dogs and watching the plants wilt around you. Set whatever building it is housed in on fire and walk away.

Pretty much this.

She should have just destroyed the mirror with that rig up on the ceiling as soon as she brought it into the house.

The Raid 2 would have been a good movie if it wasn't 2 hours and 28 minutes farking long.  Too much talky, not enough fighty.

I think that's why it seemed better than most. Thor 2 and IM3 were reliant upon comic-book plots - and neither translated well to film. CA2 was more like a Bourne movie that happened to star Marvel characters. I like Bourne movies and Marvel characters... so unsurprisingly, I liked CA2.

/it also partially redeemed the slow start to Agents of Shield

Oh, c'mon!  The Browns could win 8 games if they played more than 2 quarters of football per game.  The incredible part is that they made good draft choices.

I would just like to put out that a WWE Films moving staring Amy Pond just made more opening weekend than a Kevin Costner sports movie.

But it's also very different from what made CA1 good.  In that, they spent significantly more time building the characters and story before the action scenes started.  Because of that, the bond between CA and Bucky felt more real, and CA seemed heroic without being a Superman-ish boyscout.

I would love to have seen more scenes of CA and the winter soldier interacting. With dialogue. Maybe we see him get his mind wiped more than the one time.  Felt like a missed opportunity.

I also watch movies in the Marvel universe not to see CA or Black Widow or whoever, but how things are when its CA AND Black Widow.  The interactions between superpowered beings is far more interesting than any one character on its own.

They're getting really good at team-ups. It was good to see Rhodey finally get some action in IM3, even if very little of it was in the Warmachine suit. The Thor movies have done a piss-poor job at developing the Warriors Three, but at least we had a little bit of Thor/Loki team-up in the second movie.

I'd actually like to see Thor and Heimdall fighting side by side in the future... he's been handled pretty well in the films. A Widow/Hawkeye spy film has potential if they can find a convincing villain and setting for it - they had good chemistry in Avengers. I'd also like to see a Whedon-directed Hulk film with Ruffalo given the right supporting hero.

Finally got to CA2 today, loved it. Good plot, great action scenes, some comedy but not enough to distract from the serious theme. Also felt it was a seemless way to introduce Falcon.
