It's an ongoing conflict, there will be propaganda on both sides.  We won't know The Truth™ until after the dust settles.  The Internet Information Brigade fails miserably at providing credible information during ongoing politically driven conflicts.  Would you trust a boatload of college freshmen to provide credible information via a game of Telephone across the globe?  Some people do, and you get wonderful reports of some horrific protest related death that never actually happens but is widely touted because nobody takes the time to farking research anything.

Donetsk riot police have switched sides and refused orders to fire on the pro-Russian crowd:
http://rt.com/news/rally-donetsk-slavyansk-ukraine-160/
(also, isn't it funny how the Western media headlines all say "gunmen take over buildings", yet they never called the Right Sector members "gunmen" when they did the same in Western Ukraine? I guess it's like the distinction between "freedom fighter" and "terrorist", or "government" and "regime")

Here's inside footage shot by the so-called "Polite Armed Men in Green" of their successful operation to take over Crimea without a single death:

Also, while this thread is still young, I'm going to put this link here.

A very good "man on the street" perspective from Russia on this whole crisis:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dfzMnP3ilcI
(turn on English subtitles by using the CC button at the bottom right of the video)

I posted it in a previous thread, but it was dying down already so I don't think many people saw it.

Here's what Grahor said about the video in that thread:

If you are really interested in how Russian mind works and what Russians think about the situation, watch the video Esn posted. Goblin is not "pro-Putin", while he is absolutely pro-imperial; he is absolutely and utterly NOT a part of propaganda machine; he is honestly independent, and that's exactly what he thinks. Not that he is paid to think, not that he is afraid to think otherwise, but what he thinks. You may find it disgusting, ridiculous, etc, but that's what people of Russia will believe, the majority of them. Consider the situation accordingly.

I don't doubt that there are some Fox News-level shenanigans going on in the Russian press right now. Yet, they are reporting a lot more footage on the ground than Western news, who mostly focus on the political talking heads.

Besides, even the esteemed BBC made a video report about the prominent presence of neo-Nazi-like groups in Kiev these days. Take a look:

So there's at least a reason why people might think that fake photograph was legit.

If embedded journalists in Iraq and Afghanistan taught us anything, pictures of military hardware and civilians without proper context and actual analysis is pretty worthless and when spun right can be very misleading.

Big round-up of "on the ground" sources/citizen journalists in Ukraine here:
http://vineyardsaker.blogspot.co.uk/2014/04/fyi-news-sources-about-r us sia-and.html
(in Russian)

It sure does look like the first few shots of a civil war right now. And some products and medicines are becoming hard to find on shelves.

I remember reading Aleksandr Zograf's dispatches from the Yugoslavian civil war, about how at first soldiers from opposite sides would call each other and say "don't shoot, you could kill someone!"

Here is a third video with him: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGklZkIjq0w#t=137  for "Sevastopol news". A third story, heh, heh. In this one he is just a bystander, children doctor, etc etc...

I think everybody can agree that if it was an organized propaganda effort, even organized badly, the stories at least would be consistent. What can be taken out of that hilarious situation is 1) Russian journalists don't fact-check their stories at all and 2) local eyewitnesses may not be reliable at all.

P.S. As for the link to video Esn provided: I'm not saying that what the guy in video says is true or support it, I say that it's a pretty good description of what and how Russians think; why they support what they support and how they see the situation.

While a government can always be known as a regime, such as "Obama's regime", the difference between a freedom fighter and a terrorist is easy - a freedom fighter fights a government, and a terrorist 'fights' civilians. While both may use bombs, one bombs malls and mass transit areas, the other bombs government buildings and perhaps banks.
If you ever find yourself in a situation where you want to cut through the bullshiat, check who's bombing what.

/ and those criteria make the Palestinian militants neither, just farking insane. And they are. Because they have no other choice really.

This reminds me of that time America invaded Iraq. Only we didn't have to have state TV fake the coverage for us, because private news stations were happy to do the job. In fact, our "state TV," PBS, was one of the least biased sources of information about the war. Which is part of why those on the right want so badly to censor it.

He will be very offended that you called him "Putin's shill", and will follow that with a comment to the effect of "while I don't condone what Putin is doing, I understand it, and let's not pretend that everybody else doesn't do the same thing."

Of course, if "everybody else is doing the same thing" it should be no problem to list all of the similar annexations happening around the world.

There's not even a shred of doubt that there is an organised Russian propaganda effort. The fact that that effort is often inept doesn't change that.
