1lastcall: Raised Catholic, but I'm recovering nicely. That being said, I was a little shocked. Secular music in church, pridefulness from the priest and clapping ... all of it made me wince. Watching it was right up there with watching my non-Catholic-but-pretends-to-be SIL fill her plastic water bottle from the baptismal font because she wanted some holy water. It is all just ... not okay.

You appear to have some more recovering to do. Either that, or you still have an unconscious affinity to Mel Gibson-style Catholicism that you haven't yet shed. When I was in the children's choir in the 70s, we occasionally sang secular music as part of the Mass, and no one had a problem with it. Also, I see no "pridefulness" from the priest, just a smile at the couple partway through.

Good grief, some of you people need to unwind a little, or maybe get the stick out of your butt, whichever is more appropriate.

I couldn't watch more then 5 seconds of him singing. It made me really uncomfortable. I am glad my pastor didn't do any weird stuff during our wedding.

Curious: that the guest broke into applause seems rather tacky.

Yeah, a spontaneous expression of joy following an amazing bit of music on a loved one's wedding day...what a disaster.

I was raised Catholic, but I'd have been one of the first clapping.  That was completely awesome. I'm surprised by how many of the comments here are negative, even for fark. It was a lovely rewording of a pretty song and he did an amazing performance of it.  The wedding party looked touched and happy.

megarian: Pretty. Pretty song.

They did a great job of rewriting it. What a cool surprise for what looks like a long ceremony. Anytime I get invited to a catholic wedding and I see chairs on the altar I try and escape before anybody knows I have been there....

That's not the type of song I'd like sung at my wedding. Doesn't seem like the moment for melancholy
