Strictly speaking, he lost a 1/24 chance of winning a million dollars if he had been the winner of the previous rounds.

That said... Dumbass

She mispronounced it too

Pronounced Achilles like "A chill us."  On one hand, it's not Jeopardy...on the other, you're in college and don't know how to pronounce Achilles?

Wheel of Fortunate?

There are people who use the internet who watch Wheel of Fortune? I mean sure there are 80 year olds who could be reading that story but I don't see that as their target market.

It's Indiana University. That would be like a 3rd grade level difficulty for any respectable university.

You might say that was his Achilles heel.

I'm not sure when to put on the sunglasses.

Pat Sajak looked *really* uncomfortable having to congratulate the girl for "winning".

Yah, all the stuff going around is really over the top. While he had the card for a moment, most don't take it to the end much less get the card off the bonus wheel and then of course solve the puzzle. I think he fell on his face for that particular answer, but it is hardly as if he had the money in his hands when that happened. Sloooowwwww news day.

2014-04-12 08:37:34 PM
Not only did he mispronounce Achilles, he said "dicespin" instead of "decision" on that last puzzle.

I hope his college buddies give him a hard time back at school.

Either he's dyslexic or he was hired by the producers to make something that would go viral and drum up interest in the show. And it's working.

Look at all the magic targets he'shiatting, and then fumbles the answers. If that happens once, sure, maybe he just doesn't know anything about Greek mythology and he's not a Brad Pitt fan, but the subsequent times where he wins the car and gets THAT obvious answer wrong as well? ....something seems suspicious.

Don't get worked up about it, something jammed the guy up, or he had something going on that screwed with him.  If you wish to hoist a conspiracy on Wheel of Fortune over this incident, I think you may be overthinking it and seeing things where they are not.

Or, I could be hired by the Wheel to say that.

Oh. My. God.  I just finished watching that.  What a dumbass.  Seriously, what a dumbass.  As a result, cute blonde girl gets some cash, so there's that.

Can someone please tell me what the logic is behind saying "Incorrect" just because of a mispronunciation?

Did you watch the video?  At the end of the video, dumbass contestant is shown trying to solve "On the Spot D_c_s__n.

He says, "On the spot dice-spin"
That's wrong.  It's "decision."
If the show allowed "mispronunciation," then all wrong guesses would be "mispronunciation."  The rule apparently extend to puzzles that are completely solved, too, like the A-Chill-Us puzzle.

If it were Welsh, "Achilles" would be pronounced "George Wembly-Jones".

It's pronounced "ah-SHEEL" if you're talking about the villain in the first few Ender's Shadow books. He pronounced his name French-style.

I had that episode on the TV, and I walked in right when that happened, and I had no idea why Pat was so uncomfortable.

That's the bit I saw. My brother and I laughed so much, and so derisively at that moron.

Hrm... how do -we- know he mispronounced it? I mean, it's not like any of us met the guy. Think about it.

2014-04-13 12:26:51 AM
Well, it's about as close to the original Greek pronunciation as the standard English pronunciation is, so he's got that going for him.

2014-04-13 12:28:40 AM
I feel really bad for him.  That's a 'haunt me and scar me the rest of my life' type of fail during the entire show.

And the worst?  According to this article, there was a big watch party in Res for the guy.

He KNOWS how it goes.  Filmed in February, only to go sit in a large room with 18 and 19 year olds mocking him, when the moment comes.

Achilles?  A-kill-eeze, or ah-sheel.  Depending on where you're from.

Thank you, I do see how people claiming "I just mispronounced" to try and cover an actual mistake could be a problem
