(Jezebel)   Prom dresses are especially hideous this year. This is a repeat of every year since the invention of the prom, and probably even before that   ( divider line

Instead of a strapless evening gown, we've got gownless evening straps.

zimbomba63: 1992 and it was my oldest step-daughter's senior prom.  She and my wife had gone shopping for a dress several times and nothing appealed to her.  My wife suggested she pick out a pattern and wife would make the dress (she made her wedding dress, which looked great, so she could do this).  She picks out a pattern for a dress that the blonde bombshells of the late 50's, early 60's used to wear: long, strapless, tight fitting and a high slit up the side.  She showed me the picture on the pattern and I said, "Oh!".  She had a couple of things going for her with this dress: she was blonde, and how should I say it, nature had been very kind in giving her a very good figure.  So they work on the dress, with multiple fittings, etc.  I never see the product that they're producing.  Prom day comes with all that entails, and her date arrives with another couple, who they're splitting the limo with.  My wife wants me to video the step-daughter's grand descent down the stairs in her creation.  So I'm videoing and in the scene are the other three.  I've got to add the other girl has one of the typical lacy, frilly type prom dress on.  Step-daughter comes half way down to the landing.  The dress is dark blue, satiny and very tight, she got long dark blue gloves on, her blonde hair is not up, but loose on to her shoulders and the dress has a slit up to her thigh.  She looks exactly like one of those Hollywood sex kitten actresses from the early 60's. On the tape, you can hear me let out an "WHOA!".  You can, also, see the other girl's shoulders sag. The two guys are staring at her speechless.  Yes, bad, bad, bad step-father thoughts, were going through my head that evening.

This is one of those things you probably don't want to tell people.

Eh, they weren't all that bad. Some were actually fairly fun in a gaudy sort of way. I've seen worse at some of the local formal stores, but these are some of the more extreme dresses out there. Most of the actual dresses in the stores are relatively tame and many of them are the same tried and true styles that they've been for years.

Of course most of these dresses will age badly in the years to come, but that's the norm for any prom dress. I mean, just google "80s prom dress" and see what you find.

I'm pretty sure if you took a bunch of random pictures of any type of clothing item you could find plenty of ugly ones and these were for sure mostly ugly, but I'm not sure if it's indicative of all prom dresses.

Then again, I remember having a hard time finding something I liked.  I finally settled on a simple long, black dress.  Puffy and pink are not my thing.

My little sis showed me the one she picked out. It wasn't hideous in the slightest, but simple and elegant. Then again, she doesn't go around trying to keep up with trends.
Can't excuse bad taste on everyone elses part though.

Rand's lacy underwear: Didn't she heroin and drink herself to death before I was born?

I really like that jumpsuit.

1964-68 were good years for prom dresses.

/Girls were prettier in the mid 60s.

Nogale: Phew. I'm so glad no one asked me to the prom, forcing me to pick out some monstrosity of a dress. *sob*

Would you go to the prom with me?

What the hell?  I went to prom around...either 1998 or 1999, and the dresses were WAAAAAY classier than that.
