Cutting back on their coverage of footy, cricket and hipsters sitting on a couch will only improve their already fantastic news coverage.  I will watch even more now.

It's the only news left on TV that even comes close to reflecting the broad reality.  But as we all know, reality has a left leaning bias.

Or maybe the idea of starting yet another 24 hour news channel that no one will watch is not a financially sound prospect.

It's the only place to find news on the boob tube anymore. I get up about 4:30, get a dose of bullshiat from World News Now an then head over to Al Jazeera to find out what happened in the world and not what the bubble head thinks what happened.

Same here.  I watch it online mostly.. It's one of the last solid news organizations left.  Ahwell.. I guess it's time to tune into "Ow my Balls!" brought to you by Brawndo and Carls Jr.

Anyone know if/when AT&T will carry the network?

Too bad, good news source. I think they're a good news outlet who has been actually trying to bring THE news without the dead fish wrapped in it.

2014-04-12 12:03:43 PM
I watch BBC World News America in the evening as opposed to the nightly news on the Big 3.  I wish my cable subscription gave me access to their 24/7 news channel as opposed to the 30 minute segment I get in the evenings on PBS.

One of the areas they are cutting back is sports which doesn't seem to be their strength anyway. Their approach looks like "Let's focus on the stories behind the games." which fewer people care about. They only article about the NBA was about Jason Collins, but they have articles about the plight of the migrant workers building the infrastructure for the world cup and olympics.

I remember thinking Al Jazeera will never work in the US of A. They could have hired me as their marketing director and paid me millions of dollars.

2014-04-12 12:56:14 PM
They don't need sports-there is no shortage of sports coverage. IMHO, they are among the best of the "large" news channels.

2014-04-12 12:57:33 PM
Maybe because I can't stream it for free online anymore?

Still read the site, they do damn good work, but I miss my free live feed goddammit.  Put commercials in it, I'll still watch.

Well, to be clear, lost access to Al Jazeera English when Al Jazeera America came 'round.  Still annoying.

2014-04-12 01:07:00 PM
The only 2 news outlets I trust to any real degree are the BBC and Al Jazeera.  Both fine organizations.  CNN sucks, and FOX is full of dittoheads.

2014-04-12 01:08:26 PM
Cutting back on sports is a good idea. There is plenty of coverage already and nobody thinks Al Jazeera when they want to find out how their favorite team did last night.

Sports and weather are the 2 quickest ways to make me change the channel.  I don't care about sports at all and I really do not care if it's 20 degrees C in Doha  Besides, to do sports right, you'd have to spend an inordinate amount of time given that there are so many different games of so many different sports being played every day.

Covering normal weather is pointless.  I can spend 10 seconds getting a 5-day forecast on my computer and if I want to know current local conditions in real time I can look out a window.

Here's a big problem for them though.  I would watch them if I still had cable, but I don't, so I just watch Al Jazeera English which I don't think I'm supposed to be able to.  I imagine that in general the people who would watch Al Jazeera are more likely to have cut the cord given how mind-numbing cable TV has gotten.

Fark Almighty, THIS.  I have a weather app.  I have the Internet.  I have a Weather Station right by my coat closet, so I know what outerwear to put on in the mornings.  (It's northern Alberta.  There will be outerwear.)  Why the fark do I need someone on my TV telling me what the weather is in BumF*ck, Egypt?

This. I used to be able to tell anyone with a Roku, IPad/Droid, or just a laptop to turn on Al-Jazeera English for a different perspective and less Kardashian updates. Then they started another English network and yanked most of that away from their audience. Not the smartest move on their part to start up a new network with almost zero ways to see it without shelling out a lot more money.

There are still ways to get it the English version (not the American version -- two different things, which is part of the problem) online:

Who looks at TV for news any more.

I read a ton of sites and feeds, and know whats going on a good 12 to 72 hrs ahead of when TV gets around to doing it.

TV is still interesting.  Recently, MHz added a Ukrainian network to their lineup.  So, at 3 AM I can watch a pro-Ukrainian slant on what's happening there and at 4 AM I can watch RT America's version.  And then I can tune into Al Jazeera English and get a more objective view of things.

It's the same reason that they call it "Greek Yogurt" when it's really "Turkish Yogurt". Our whole culture has been programmed to assume that if something is Middle Eastern and/or Muslim, it must be "Evulz!".

I hope they get rid of Solodad Obrien.

Perhaps instead of calling it Al-Jazeera America, they shorten it to the AJA network. If anything, it will gain the viewership of several confused Steely Dan fans.

I work in middle management at one of the big 2 cable companies.   I cannot tell you how many phone calls we get,  having just picked up Al Jazeera Americ,  from real muricans threatening to not purchase our services because we carry a news network that is "dedicated to the destruction of America".

Honestly,  they should have named themselves something different,  if not to just avoid this crap.  I'm reminded of an Iranian family who owned a restaurant I liked in a suburb of Ohio.  You would go in and all over the place were plastic american flags,  like a cut rate 4th of july had exploded inside their otherwise fantastic restaurant.  They said they felt it necessary to show how much they loved the country in order to gain business.   It's not how it should be,  but it's how it is,  and sometimes we have to deal in reality.

Well, the Iranian family's problem is branding.  They should call themselves Persian.    In a suburb of Ohio?  The whole state has a suburb?  Is it Pittsburgh?

Al Jazeera is funded by the government of Qatar. They are not and will never be hurting for cash. Al Jazeera America does not need to turn a profit. It's just a nice bonus if it does.

...feminists like to say "check your privilege!" when it really isn't appropriate, especially when they aren't checking it themselves.

This comment, however, might be the first time in history I can truly say, and have it mean something, "check your privilege."

I only watch the BBC World News but it has the benefit of being incredibly depressing. Occasionally they'll flip from sectarian violence to something about British royalty and it comes off weird.

PBS Newshour is pretty good, too, but their interviewers lob softballs at morons. Gwen Ifill seriously sat and listened to Marco Rubio's plan for a receptionist single mother with 2 kids to get a real college degree by answering phones.

And I for one am not that interested in taking the Government of Qatar's view of things, any more than I am of RT and the Russian Government's view on things.

Qatar is a shiatty nation, Russia is a shiatty nation. Thats why I shop for news everywhere, and tend to stick with neutral countries for the most part: BBC, Singapore, Australia, Hong Kong, Canada. I like these places' views on the world. I sure don't like terrorist funding oil barons, FIFA bribing world cup ruining criminals, or ex commie oligarchs.
