Good for them. Do it, please colonize the moon.

This is the new energy rush. The helium-3 on the moon is not just a scifi mcguffin. That is the stuff that will power the future.

The surface of the moon could be littered with platinum bricks and it still wouldn't be cost effective to harvest them.

Yea... we could totally do that. We just don't want to. That's the ticket.

Obviously, because the price of platinum would plummet. But if a single shuttle craft cargo hold full of platinum was enough to power NYC for 100000 years and platinum was only available in such quantities on the moon, it might be worth it to go up there and get it.

Assuming someone to actually build a working commercially viable reactor design first, and one that requires helium 3 instead of something more common like deuterium that we can just pull out of the ocean.

Good for them.  I hope they succeed.  Someone has to keep funding scientific research and engineering new technologies.  It certainly isn't going to be the U.S. if the trend we're on continues.

Yep.  If anybody thinks a bomb made from hydrogen is powerful, wait until there is a helium one.

They should probably build a launch pad in their own country then.   Or will they just invade Kazakhstan and take that back too?  Russia's a mess.

Either get there first or suffer under the iron fist of the ones that do.

Is there any part of that you are failing to understand?

It`s basically the course of history so far and I see no reason why the future will be any different.

`there` is space, not my penis.

Like we got to North America 'first'? Or how Spain got to South America 'first'?

Let them go first. The moon dust alone will break every machine they send out there, and leave their team to die.

They couldn't even get to the Moon during the height of their Soviet power. What makes them think they can pull it off now?

As far as dictators go, Stalin in like Peter O'Toole while Putin is just David Hasselhoff.

Their own country is too far north for easy launching.

Expect a partnership with a nation further south.

This is what we should be doing... Should have been doing...

Imagine for a moment if we had not wasted billions on the shuttle program and instead jumped straight from the moon landings to a permanently manned moon base.   Imagine the technological advancements we have ignored for decades...

They can't. But they want to believe they can very much.

*shrug* I actually all for them trying. At least that way there would be something that'll take their attention off the rest of the world.

Mrbogey: Expect a partnership with a nation further south.

Kazakhstan is in good enough position and is a certifiable client state of Russia, so they don't need to have some other partnerships.

India is in better position, as is Iran, but they lack connection to Russia, so not an option.

I don't disagree with what you're saying, but don't forget about all the goodies that have spun-off from the shuttle program.

It's hard to get up there, easy to get down. That's why you need a base.

Google.

I don't get what you're saying.  Google was developed in the U.S., so my point is invalid?  If that's what you're saying, so what?  Yes, they've come up with some seriously cool tech, but it's just one company in a country with a huge economy and over 300E6 people.  We've been continually cutting funding for education and research for quite some time, and the trend has accelerated since the great teabagging of 2010.  On top of that the fundies seem to be winning battles to teach the next generation that Jaysus rode a dinosaur and evolution is bullsh*t and vaccinations make ya go all tarded.

As I said, if this trend continues, I don't expect the United States to be putting out a lot of talented scientists and engineers in the future.  We've essentially vacated the position of world tech leader.  Maybe nobody has claimed the title yet, but we certainly don't hold it at this point.

I think if you compare the two space programmes' record, NASA's overall body count is lower.
