I'm not subby, but the joke is Tom Watson.  Which is weird, because Tom won again in 1981.

Maybe Subby was a thin-skinned Johnny Miller fan.

No, Subby wouldn't have done that. In a situation like that, Subby would probably... well, I hate to use the term "choke", but he'd definitely feel the pressure of the moment.
