FTFA: "It's not to the exclusion of anyone else's sacred literature," he told the House committee. He added, "This is not about establishing an official religion of the state of Louisiana."

YES. YES IT IS YOU IDIOTIC farkSTICK. Even a second grader could see that. You are de-facto endorsing the Christian religion by making it a legislative act that your state endorses the Christian Bible. (Which one?)

FTFA:"It's not meant to be offensive," he explained. "There's no requirement that they would have to follow this particular text."

It does not matter if it's "offensive" or not. It does not matter if it's a "requirement to follow it" or not.  It is a blatantly unconstitutional endorsement of religion. It's not even questionable. It's an OUTRIGHT violation of the exact text of the First Amendment.

Oh FFS. Do they not have copies of the Constitution in LA or something?

2014-04-11 04:59:39 PM
We support all religions. Christians AND Jews for Jesus.

Which version of the Bible will be the Louisiana state book?

/Kansas will go for the King James Version

My favorite part is that the lawmakers argued amongst themselves over which version to use, eventually pulling all version specific text from the bill, yet were dense enough not to be able to abstract that argument to how non-christians would view this.

2014-04-11 05:02:41 PM
Rep. Thomas Carmody (R) said he sponsored the proposal at the request of a constituent but insisted that the bill wasn't designed to be a state-endorsement of Christianity.

yeah, and i'm sure making dianetics the official text would merely be the endorsement of crappy science fiction

That's awesome.

FTFB:
"Proposed law provides for the recognition and acknowledgment of the legislature as it relates to the state motto as found in the state pledge of allegiance: " A state, under God, united in purpose and ideals, confident that justice shall prevail for all of those abiding here."

So much for the "Civic God" argument.

We have friends who are trust fund babies that travel a lot, meaning they keep pulling their kids out of school to travel.

Now, Mr. Janus and I believe that travel can be just as or more educational as actual school, but in this case they pulled the kids out to go to Louisiana.  I mean, WTF are you going to learn in Louisiana?  How to be complete dumbfarks?

This is a good example where reading about it is fine -- not something you need to experience firsthand.

So somebody heard SC decide that a state fossil was too offensive unto The Lord and said "that's not quite enough zeal"?

Aren't there innumerable other ways the "I HAVE TO SHOW EVERYONE HOW MUCH MORE MORALLY AWESOME I AM THAN THEY" crowd can keep shouting about how Christian they are?

FFS, give it a goddamn rest at the government level.

2014-04-11 05:50:20 PM
You're not making government better; you're making religion worse.

// and that takes some doing
// that "wall of separation" is for the benefit of both sides
// religious leaders that are also political leaders? Sounds Stalin-y

Why not Green Eggs and Ham? I hear it's very anti-Taftcare which is just as good.

That person still comes across as a dumbfark.  "Well, can't fault them for voting on it, even though it's dumb."

Yes, yes you can fault them on it.  This is why people hate you.

Well, in all fairness it's also English-y.

I'd call them pharisees, but I'd doubt they'd get the joke. You'd have to actually read the damn thing instead of just pounding on it.

My husband and I tried to read a kid's version Bible to our eight year old son. I was raised without any kind of religious input, so I didn't read the Bible until I was like... 18. My husband, though he considers himself a staunch atheist, was read the Bible as a child.

Now imagine his face and his thoughts as he attempts to read (and explain) the Flood story to our son... Who really doesn't like people dying for no reason, like some random dude claiming they're bad. Ahh, good times.

So, to the point, even the kid's version can be... confusing... :)

/I felt really bad for my husband, who spent 30 minutes after that going "Buh..." and ranting
//I cheated by reading the Sumerian and Chinese versions

He can't be a true conservative christian.  He seems to have a decent grasp of the concept of separation of church and state.

Their state book should be a famous Cajun/Creole cookbook.

That guy really thinks making a religious text (no mention which version of it) the state book isn't an establishment of religion?

I think the GOP found its wedge issue for 2014.  "They won't let us honor the Bible".

//Thanks for the new brick for the wall, Louisiana

They should make Arameic the state language. If it was good enough for Jesus...

Nah. We knew that one wouldn't fly. But we were both still surprised that even the ones he remembered as being fine weren't exactly Disney-approved. Mind you, that's not just the Bible. The number of kid's stories that start out with "Boy X decides to go on journey because he wants to marry..." :/

Liberals gathered in their masses,
just like witches at black masses.
Democrat minds that plot destruction,
sorcerers of Soro's construction.
In the fields the libs protesting ,
as the derp machine keeps turning.
Death and hatred to the godly,
poisoning their brainwashed bodies...Oh lord yeah!

Yeah this is gonna result in a suing if it passes as its clearly a violation of the constitution.  I seriously hope some folks down there have enough sense to stop this before it passes as the lawyers are probably reread salivating,
