While the Republicans can claim some of this through their budget cutting, expect them to claim ALL of it was their doing, and cry that we would have a bigger surplus without Oburmer.

Perfect timing for a new Bush to ransack it for the safety of the American people from tourists.

The GOP is the floozy who picks him up in a waterfront bar and REALLY spends all his money.

It sure didn't take Chimpy McFlightsuit long to burn through Clinton's surplus.

This is step 1 of their plan.

This is step 2 of their plan.

Step 3 is obviously profit.

Clinton leaves a surplus
Bush takes over and starts two wars and destroys the economy
Obama takes over, fixes the economy, ends two wars, and leaves a surplus

Logically in 2016:
Jeb Bush wins, US economy completely collapses and you invade Canada

The CBO has a little bit to say about that huge assumption of "If this trend continues".

It has been great that they have been falling, but it is very unlikely that the trend will continue as the Baby Boomers start to retire in force and entitlement spending increases.

We won't resist at first.  You come in, take over, start drinking our beer, sleeping with are beautiful women in Montreal, being polite and shiat.  Before you know it, you are drinking milk out of bags, demanding single payer, playing hockey.  We will destroy you from within - but in a nice way.  No offense.  Sorry.

From reading that assessment it seems the CBO is being pessimistic and assuming the economy won't improve much from where it is now.  That's certainly possible, but I doubt they are right, most likely it will be much better or much worse. The CBO prefered to predict "stable" because doing else wouldn't make sense.

MindStalker: From reading that assessment it seems the CBO is being pessimistic and assuming the economy won't improve much from where it is now.

No, the CBO projections do assume a continued increase in revenue (which would be akin to a growing economy).  However, historical revenues generally average about 18.5% of GDP and we are getting pretty close to that now (17.9%).

A better analysis of the full numbers used in the CBO baseline is presented here.

If you want the true 'pessimistic' projection look through the Alternative Fiscal Scenario in the same link. Sadly, the Alternative Fiscal path seems to be the one we are taking.

Only because Congress and the President continue to shoot America in the foot over and over and over again.

Obama should take the other path.  The good one.

Yeah, you know me better than to think that I am going to argue with that.  This current path is the path of least resistance and - with the way politics are - it is very difficult to buck that momentum.

Yeah, he is on the correct side of some of these issues (taxes) but on the wrong side of other (spending).  Plus even if Obama was on the right path, you can bet that congress would pretty much line up on the opposite side.

Given the CBO's track record for budget projection, I wouldn't put too much faith in their numbers. Not to knock them, it is simply impossible to accurately project out 10 years.

You jest, but should we actually go into the campaign with a surplus, the GOP will make tax cuts the centerpiece of their presidential campaign and point to any surplus as proof that we can "afford" them.

Good point. Why did Obama create social security and medicare!!!

Oh wait, he didn't.

Why does Obama refuse to make changes in Social Security and Medicare!!!

Oh wait he is willing to but he wants tax increase to be included to help get rid of the deficit even more but Republicans refuse to even sit down and discus this.

"For the first time since the 1950s, federal spending is lower than it was four years ago."

That dictatorial incompetent secret-muslim-with-a-crazy-Christian-pastor HAS A TIME MACHINE, remember? He just went back in time and swapped fiscal years to make a bad trend look better. I did that once with my grades in high school. It's not like it's hard.

Don't worry, they will probably take the senate this year and then claim if the budget gets balanced that it was because of their doing, and that rich people are paying too much in taxes (obviously they must if we're headed to a budget surplus) and start the cycle all over again.

Is it because Obama got his almost $4 trillion (in one year) budget shot down almost unanimously in the House a few days ago? If there's a surplus in 2 years (yeah, right) it will be despite Obama.

Wow! So If I don't spend a million dollars on something it will make me a million dollars richer.

So you still really haven't explained why we shouldn't be blaming Republicans for the issues you have brought up instead of Obama. Since Obama actually wants to do something about those issues you are bringing up and Republicans refuse to discuss them.

Corvus: So what what was you point again?

My point in that post you copied is simply that deficits are not anticipated to keep on the current path.  They are anticipated to bottom out at about 2.8% of GDP and then start rising again (per the CBO baseline scenario)

I did make the assumption he wasn't talking about fun bags.  While sounding great, I imagine there would be some complications if I'm wrong.
