(Outside Online)   Scientists have figured out a way to turn astronauts' pee into clean drinking water, although it does have a certain tang to it   (outsideonline.com) divider line 29

That was my first thought as well. In a closed chain like a shuttle or station it seems silly and wasteful to jettison resources. Really thought they'd be recycling before now.

I thought they'd sent up the recycling thing a few years ago myself.

Also, all the 'forward osmosis' does is reduce the cost of purifying urine into water.  You could always do it via distillation.  Heck, play with vacuums and you don't even need that much heat.

I wonder about people who somehow think that filtering water through a couple hundred feet of earth and rock over the course of months/years is superior to the best filters humans can create.

Hey Outside magazine: HAWTALA.

Astronauts have been drinking water reclaimed from urine for a few years.  It started in 2009.

The space station has had a water recycling system since 2009. This is either old news or the important bit is actually about the ammonia fuel cells. I'm not sure if they were doing that before or not.

Good, but we don't have nearly enough astronauts to make a dent in the world's clean drinking water needs.
