(Short List)   Game of Thrones is such a big deal that in 2012 more babies were named 'Khaleesi' than 'Betsy'. 'Khaleesi', as in, "married to a murderous, pillaging warlord"   (shortlist.com) divider line 59

Betsy is normally a diminutive, not a legal name.

I feel pretty bad for all those Theons, too.

Khaleesi, the chick sexually molested by a relative and raped repeatedly by the tender age of 14.

She totally won't become a stripper.

Ain't even mad. Get back to me when these dickweeds start naming their kids Drizzt Dofarkingurden.

IDK about most of the GoT names... but I think Stormborn would be cool as a middle name if your kid is actually born during a storm.

Does it vaguely annoy anyone else that they're naming their kids after a character's title, not the character's name?  Sort of a real world equivalent of naming your kid 'Highness' or 'Queen.'

//I'm going to name my son "Lord Commander."

Or Prince.  That's a popular one.

As far as Khaleesi...  As much as I like the character, the people she married into are a bunch of murdering assholes.  Near the end of the first book, where that woman betrayed her and effectively killed her husband...  At first I thought she was a real prick.  Until I thought about her reasoning for why she acted as she did.

Once again, we see the trend of most likely single mothers naming their child after whatever pop sensation is shiny and bright at the time.

My 10 year old daughter is surrounded by Sydneys and Madisons and I can't for the life of me figure out why Madison is popular.  Sydney, probably from that show Alias.

notsureifserious. The trend is dumb, but of course Twilight is worse than GoT. I mean, I don't get it, why is that even a question?

I think the silliness of this wont really come in to focus for about 30 years, once the popularity of Game of Thrones & twilight are a distant memory. How odd those names will sound.

Ever met someone named "Earl"?  "Duke" has a surge of popularity in the early 1900s.  Cesar Romero might also like a word with you (got a ouija board?).  In fact, while we're at it, here is a baby name website listing for Boy's names that translate as the title for some kind of ruler, and here are the girls'.

The popularity of Twilight is already over.  Game of Thrones will have some staying power becuase 1.  It's still on HBO and will be on DVD forever.  And 2. the last book only just came out.

I don't know that it's ever going to go all Tolkein on us.  But in modern times it's about as close as anything that could.

I once did a community theater production with a guy named Dain.  His younger brother... I kid you not... Thorin... was one of my students.

I always thought there was something strange about that family, seeing as how the boys were named after Tolkein dwarf lords, but the girl was named Tamar, a character in the Bible... who gets raped by her brother.

I get it and I didn't think the trend was anything new.  Of course with time, if it's popular enough, a name like Khaleesi will normalize, just like Earl did.

In the moment, though, I just find it a little odd to say the equivalent of 'oh, Princess Diana is so wonderful, I'll call our daughter Princess!' rather than using her actual name.

Can't imagine what would have happened if a better/stronger actress had gotten the role of Danaeyrs.  There might have been more girls named Khaleesi than boys named Jayden!

I know I am naming mine Arya if I ever have a girl since it's conveniently a pseudo amalgamation of mine and my wife's name. Khaleesi I do not get. The name doesn't even roll in the tongue nicely. Why not Daenarys?

I will admit, I almost got away with naming my son "Harold Lloyd" since they're the names of one each my wife's and my grandpas.  Unfortunately, someone pointed out the Dumb & Dumber reference.  So close.

So I got Jebediah instead.

There's a lesson there: A noble spirit embiggens the smallest man.

The kind of people who name their kids after TV show characters aren't capable of noticing who is or isn't a good actor.  The actress is sexy and badass and has dragons, and that's enough.

Then why don't they just masterbate to her like a normal person?  Why bring kids' names into it?

Seriously. That's like naming your kid Damien.

Khaleesi - well, she starts as just the wife of a warlord, but ends up remaining in charge without him. So it's at least better than naming your kid "Princess" or "Queenie".

I do like the idea of naming a girl Arya, though. Good obvious spelling/pronunciation, sounds like a reasonable girl's name, and Arya is a strong, independent female character.
