Wrong tag I think. It would be "Ironic" of she would get mugged on TV while talking about how GREAT the police force is. That sounds more like a case for the "Obvious" tag.

Why did they blur out the face of the thief?

Because it was the network's CEO.

What was he even grabbing for?  The purse was on the other shoulder.  Don't try and tell me this is one of those "the bottom half of the world does things in reverse business" either.

It was the part where the hand appears on camera and slides down her neck around the gold chain of her necklace and pulls away.

He didn't actually manage to get the necklace, but it looks like he broke the chain in the process.

Maybe he just likes breaking necklaces.

I love how they don't bother to tell you what country it is until the last paragraph. That's some fine reporting.

the law in Brazil is that minors involved in crimes, even those convicted, can't be identified.

When I saw them mention Brazil I went back and reread the first part 3 times to make sure I hadn't missed it.

Its really hard to see in the article... but if you go full-screen, you'll see she has a rather thin necklace on.  Difficult to see even in full-screen- but its there.

Most of us got it by "South American country" since it had earlier stated "Portuguese".

Also, the URl of the link in the first paragraph is http://hypervocal.com/news/2014/brazil-woman-mugged-live-tv.

But yeah, weird that the article wasn't explicit until the end.

Maybe it's some form of news-puzzle site for people that don't want to simply be spoon fed.

I'm assuming that is what native Brazilian Portugese sounds like, but the male reporter, I would have sworn that was Russian (though I picked out a few words that sounded Spanish.)

Brazil is a shiathole.  It has some beautiful places, some compelling old culture and genuinely nice people, but it's still a shiathole.  I don't get how the Olympic committee so often picks these dangerous, poverty-stricken developing nations as destinations when safer countries with greater equality get ignored.

It's telling that the woman in this video finds nobody rushing to her aid except the guy asking her the questions.

No.

I think the the majority of the drug gangs are smart enough not to harm tourists. The Brazilian special forces units (BOPE) are some of the most dangerous motherfarkers in South America. The bangers know that they will straight up roll through their favela and start shooting basically at random. The cops are more bloodthirsty than the gang bangers.

I assume it was Brazil because in the first sentence it says "in the middle of a Brazilian news segment" and they're talking Spanish like they're drunk.  Portuguese sounds exactly like very drunken Spanish.

Also, there is not shiathole in South America like a Brazilian shiathole.  I can't wait for the World Cup or the Olympics.  It's going to be a shiatstorm.

Oh, you're technically right.  Nothing was actually stolen by the legal definition.  Still kinda crazy... and attempted robbery is a crime.

A crappy but wearable necklace that probably cost her a month's wages, now a broken chain that will cost her two months' wages to repair or replace.

/yes, it will cost more to replace it
//people living in a consumer culture where everything is mass produced probably don't get how that's possible
///even a crappy necklace might as well be priceless when there are no more to buy
