CSB time...I'll keep it short.

Went to Chicago with my boss many years ago for an office supply expo.  Yeah, it was exciting.  Anyway, he truly is a southern Illinois cracker.  I'm just a white guy...he was really a piece of work.  Leaving McCormick Place, he thinks he knows a shortcut.  We end up heading south past the infamous Cabrini-Green housing complex.  Boss is freaking the hell out.  Jeez, relax man.  We pass a strip of little storefronts, including one charming little shop that has a sign in the window "Headstones made while u wait".  Apparently business was booming then.

Cabrini Greens is now a Target store. That area is pretty cleaned up. It's now all condos... mostly. The crime has moved out of that area. It's almost an extension of Old Town now. Cabrini Greens was also north west of the city.. far north west from McCormick Place. Trying to think of the business around that Target now, and all I can think of is Sammy's Chicago Style Dogs on Division, and the underground shrimp place.. A headstone while you wait store doesn't surprise me if this is 1990 we are talking about.

I do not go south of McCormick place unless I'm on the freeway, or going to Cellular Field to see my Twins beat the White Sox... and I would suggest anyone else that has no reason to be south of the loop not go down there. That simple. Englewood is somewhere I would just not go.

/West & South West is not so great as well. (North West is ok)

Yeah, I tried to tell my boss he wasn't even going the right direction.  He couldn't figure out where he was going without cornfields and water towers for landmarks. After day of hearing salesmen try to tell me why their highlighter was superior, my brain was too numb, I just enjoyed the ride.  And you're pretty much right about the year!.  It was either '90 or '91.

Don't want to go to Englewood and a few other neighborhoods, but my god there's some great Caribbean food as well as the food of various African countries in some of the south side neighborhoods.

You went past the just-as-infamous-as-Cabrini-Green Robert Taylor Homes. They knocked those projects down about 10 years ago. The local neighborhood (Bronzeville) has only just began to come back to life.

Cabrini-Green is north and west of McCormick Place. You drove by the Robert Taylor Homes. The Dan Ryan Expressway was built where it is (thanks to Daley the first) to separate Bridgeport and Back Of The Yards from the Taylor towers. But I get it, they all looked the same to you & your pal. The projects, I mean. "Charming", indeed.

/cuz it's never about race
