It was a special election and, to his credit, he campaigned on more than that. Even more to his credit, he didn't go complete derp once he got to Washington and actually stood up to the national GOP more than once. In short: he's a Massachusetts Republican.

In this case it's having a high profile winning a special election against a bad candidate who ran a bad campaign and then getting your arse handed to you when it came down to a regular campaign by a Harvard Professor for whom the Senate wouldn't allow conformation to the Consumer Protection Bureau.

When you're Scott Brown you handle that situation in one of two ways; you acknowledge that you got luckier than anyone else and write a book, maybe help out on some events here and there and try and keep a low profile working with those that want your access to other government officials.

....or you admit that you crave that political spotlight like a heroin addict craves their next fix and find plenty of room in your truck (no shame to pack) and move up to New Hampshire, a place widely regarded at the South of the North by Massachusetts residents and convince the GOP mainstream that there's only one thing more than an educated Harvard elitist; an educated Harvard elitist that ousted one of their own.

Scott's not there because he's a good candidate.  Scott is up there and running because he's a whore who has the ear of the GOP because he managed what is widely known as "being damned lucky" but all GOPers think of as an earned seat which entitles him to a birthright.

....amusing because it was Ted Kennedy's old seat, the reference of ownership something the GOP brought up repeatedly during his election.

That was in New York, where there is a substantial voting block that was born somewhere else that is willing to vote for a candidate that wasn't born there either.  Outside of the southern NH commuter corridor NH is full of small town homeboys that haven't quite assimilated the French Canadians that migrated there 100 years ago, and they're the Republican voting block.  They hate Massholes especially.

The problem is that NH is sort of like Canada in that the majority of the population lives within 50 miles of the Mass border and that voting block might be up fro grabs, except that they lean Democrat generally.

I don't understand where you are going with this. You seem to imply that Hillary WAS a carpet bagger, but that in NY that is OK.  And that Brown is a bad carpet bagger, because he is trying if in NH. Is this what you were going for?

Because a previous post implied that Hillary was somehow not a carpetbagger at all since she never ran for office anywhere else.

I used to think that a carpetbagger was somebody from the north that moved to the south during reconstruction to run for office.  But now the term seems to mean something else.

What do you mean, African or European?

There's some lovely filth over here.
Those are just the ones I thought of immediately. There are dozens more!

Hampshirites either a) work in MA, b) sell goods or services to people who work in MA, or c) are poor.  They hate socialism, but can't live without those sweet, sweet socialist dollars.

Just like the rest of the northeastern "reasonable republicans".  In a way they are worse than the full on derpers; because with those, people have to face what they're voting for, and with these people can pretend they're reasonable people while voting in the legislative equivalent of Bachmann or Gohmert.

I think the gist of it was more that New Yorkers don't mind carpetbaggers, but Hampshirites do.  However, the Hampshirites who moved there to avoid MA taxes (while continuing to derive their income from MA) may think he's their kind of guy.

2014-04-10 10:30:52 AM
So there's the strong republican part of NH up north, but they loathe Massholes.  So there goes most of that base.  Then there's the folks in southern NH that either work in MA, or used to live there, which mostly leans Democrat.  So that's probably not much help.

Yep, he's boned.  Although I really don't look forward to the lead-up to the election.  We're already inundated with anti-Shaheen ads on TV.

Another thing is Hillary lived in Washington DC for the previous 8 years. Since she got kicked out of her government housing and DC doesn't have a Senator or a real Representative she was going to have to move somewhere else if she wanted to be elected as a member of Congress. She could have picked any state but in New York she had an excellent chance of being elected.

Brown is trying to get a Senate seat through process of elimination.
