I remember when I was small, every time I'd lose a balloon, I'd have a feeling that can be described as "What the hell did I let it go for?!"

What was "creepy" or "disturbing" about that? You want freaky, look at the Orangina ads.

Do you really need someone to walk you through what was "creepy" and "disturbing" about that?  Are you a sociopathic robot by any chance?

Um, there's nothing "creepy" about someone helping out a kid. That's what's wrong with the world today, a kid asked for a boost at the drinking fountain a couple of years ago, and I was afraid to help because we've turned into such a bunch of paranoid assholes. Then when he walks home, you realize that people have been misjudging him for a long time. That's the point. Scary black man giving your kid back his/her balloon isn't supposed to be a reason to panic. He didn't BRING the balloon...

Here's one. It was on Fark a few weeks ago, but it's actually like 4 or 5 years old, I think.

I'm not sure about "creepy". It's actually sorta a sweet message.  But it's probably not a good move to call your target audience racist.

Well, the other balloons are from the children he killed before their mothers were able to whisk them away. He's an infamous killer in Thailand, but leaves no evidence, as he takes the balloons home.

At the same time, I have to watch it every once in awhile, I thin it's to reset the mind-blown meter, but I usually watch it 2 or 3 times and then I'm good for a year or so.

Yeah, we had small sample-sized Darlie toothpastes at our hotel in Pakse. I would look at the box every morning and it would just leave me flabbergasted.

I was helping my aged mom run some errands the other day, and she wanted to stop in to a department store to buy a dress for my wee niece... Not wanting to spend any more time in a department store than I had to, I told her I'd have a smoke and then come find her. Then I thought about it and joked "Hmmmm... That's gonna look good... Me wandering around the little girl's clothing section." (I'm 6'3" and look like a scruffy biker.)

I had issues once when I was at the store with my wife and she was trying on clothes... Did you know that some stores like to put the training bra section directly in front of the only bench outside of the women's dressing room? Makes for some awkward "look at the ceiling for 5 straight minutes" time...

The Asian version of racism is... different. In say, the US, it's more black and white (and brown and yellow) In SE Asia they're a little more discriminating in ways that the west doesn't do, a Cambodian bringing home a Viet girl for dinner would be an Archie Bunker teaching moment where we might just think "Asian."

Blacks? Right out. They look different.

Continuing the theme, the local library put out a call for volunteers to read to kids... I thought about it, I have the skill, I love reading out loud, doing the voices and characterizations, I have a deep, rumbly storytelling vox. I've gotten good reviews from both kids and adults, and it could have been a lot of fun.

Came to the conclusion that there is no way in hell I'd not be branded some sort of pervert if I offered to volunteer. *sigh*

I used to know a guy who was a photographer and liked to take pictures of kids playing. Of course, the best way to do that is to be where they can't see him, using a telephoto lens. That wouldn't fly today at all...

And yeah, I love kids, it would be cool to be a part of a kids' program, but all it takes is a kid to relate an anecdote in the wrong way and you're screwed.
