Can someone explain to me why the word of the Fark is the thing which is appropriate in the headline of this?

News: Man goes fishing.
Fark: Does not catch the thing.

I remember when the word of this had the meaning

News: Man kills the wife of he.
Fark: With the scales of the dead fish and the husband was also the mayor of two cities.

Sucks for the whales though.

If 9 blue whales is 4% of the total population, that means there are 225 blue whales.

9 divided by .04 = 225

To put this in perspective in relation to the human world population, it would be like 286.2 million people died (based on a March 26, 2014 estimate of 7.155 billion people.)

A Blue Whale can weigh 200 or more short tons (2,000 lbs.) which makes the average Blue Whale weight in pounds about 400,000 lbs.
Lets use an average human weight of 140 lbs.
400,000 / 140 = 2857.1428
So you get about 2857 people together on a scale and you have yourself an average weighing Blue Whale!

Not to rain on the grief parade, but it's ~4% of the observed blue whale population. There are certainly many more of them out there. The Canadian Museum of Nature estimates a global population somewhere between 14 and 20 thousand. Still sucks though.

If you are ever in Ottawa you can walk beneath the skeleton of a juvenile blue whale in the Museum of Nature. The whale died in the 70s after being hit by a ship. She's about half as large as a full grown adult. It's pretty amazing.

The funny thing is that there are so many things that happen that are contrary to the claims of global warming alarmists that I come to these threads with the express purpose of seeing people sarcastically say, "Yeah and this one thing totally disproves global warming."  When you see that same thing said over and over, then it isn't just one thing any more, is it.

"Really makes you think."  To me it is honestly akin to religious nutjobs praying because the end times are upon us.  Kinda scary because you know they'll kill you if the guy in charge tells them to, but fascinating to observe.

So this begs the question: what is the best way to prepare blue whale for a meal, and how many people could 9 of them feed? And, would we have to chop it up to deep fry it, or can we just get one REALLY big deep fryer and a whole lotta flour and cocktail sauce, and fry the thing whole?

These are the things I think about when I hear about endangered species, and when I watch 'Whale Wars'.

Read the comments at the bottom of the TFA?  The one from this Mensa candidate is hilarious:
"They can't just throw some sticks of dynamite out of a helicopter or even some scud missiles to blast the ice apart. We need to make sure this does not happen again. Blasting the ice is very simple and cost effective."

When my son was five, we went to the http://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/permanent-exhibitions/biodiversity-an d -environmental-halls/milstein-hall-of-ocean-life .  As we rounded the corner to the entrance he got an OH CARP! face and ran the other way. Would not go into the hall.

Due to the Polar Vortex, it has been a really old-fashioned winter in Eastern Canada. And by old-fashioned, I mean the kind of long, icy, snow bound Hell they got when my grandparents were children. Even whales, which may live up to 200 years old according to anecdotal evidence, might not know how to cope. It's been clear that a lot of people have forgotten how to survive--few people have camping equipment because fewer people camp (the WiFi reception is terrible). People don't even know you can put your frozen food out on the frozen ground or on the frozen concrete in your garage to keep it cold when the power goes out.

Perhaps the whales were no longer cautious about getting trapped because they haven't seen this kind of ice for forty years or more.

It's tragic to lose any blue whales because populations are only a tiny fraction of what could be considered "normal" healthy levels. Consider that in the 1800s there were an estimated 19,000,000 elephants in Africa, down to 3-5 million in the 1930s and 1940s, Populations are making a comeback in South Africa (the region, not the country) and they number over 300,000. That's probably big enough to prevent extinction, but consider that elephants once roamed the whole continent as far as the Mediterranean coast. Plato said that Atlantis was outside the Pillars of Hercules and that it had elephants. Seeing as one of the best candidates for his inspiration is a city in Spain, that means their range once included Europe (including Mammoths and Mastodons, this is certain).

But for a whole ocean to be down to a couple of hundred of the largest whales is really tragic because whales have an enormous impact on the environment. Like Nibblonians, they are celebrated poopers and the small crustaceans and other living things that bloom in their wake used to make an enormous contribution to the productivity of the oceans and seas they roamed.

Imagine they took away the snow makers at the ski resorts or forced farmers to farm without fertilizer. Imagine the Serengeti devoid of large mammals. Nothing but desert and dust as far as the eye can see.

In a marine ecosystem, a single blue whale pod would be like a large herd of cariboo or bison, maintaing the food web and cycling resources. They also may sequester a fair sized chunk of carbon as their waste drops into the deeps to feed critters three miles below.

Good idea, I'm going to buy a Hummer. Also, let's bring back the big hair 80s. Wait, that was ozone. Are we not worried about the ozone layer anymore because I'm pretty sure it was going to kill us all 10 years ago?

So, how many died stuck under the ice that can't be counted? They'll become water-logged and sink before the ice melts. How many die like this each year?

kling_klang_bed: So this begs the question: what is the best way to prepare blue whale for a meal, and how many people could 9 of them feed? And, would we have to chop it up to deep fry it, or can we just get one REALLY big deep fryer and a whole lotta flour and cocktail sauce, and fry the thing whole?

We've already made up 200 pounds of batter for blue whale tempura.
