Can someone explain to me why the word of the Fark is the thing which is appropriate in the headline of this?

News: Man goes fishing.
Fark: Does not catch the thing.

I remember when the word of this had the meaning

News: Man kills the wife of he.
Fark: With the scales of the dead fish and the husband was also the mayor of two cities.

Sucks for the whales though.

If a blue whale can't breathe, what color does it turn?

MaudlinMutantMollusk: If a blue whale can't breathe, what color does it turn?

some_beer_drinker: MaudlinMutantMollusk: If a blue whale can't breathe, what color does it turn?

It's my coping mechanism for tragedy

/I'm a bit damaged, I guess

If 9 blue whales is 4% of the total population, that means there are 225 blue whales.

9 divided by .04 = 225

Mark Ratner: If 9 blue whales is 4% of the total population, that means there are 225 blue whales.

Cetaceans needed.

To put this in perspective in relation to the human world population, it would be like 286.2 million people died (based on a March 26, 2014 estimate of 7.155 billion people.)

There is probably a blue whale somewhere going GRUAAAAAAAAAGRUAAAAAAA at a subsonic level that can be heard undersea across the planet.

Of course GRUAAAAAAAAAGRUAAAAAAA means "Darwin totes LOL - BIE  EIP."

Warchild: Cetaceans needed.

Oh, well played

Thank you, rain man.  How many people would equal the weight of a blue whale?

Thank you, rain man.  How many people would equal the weight of a blue whale?

A Blue Whale can weigh 200 or more short tons (2,000 lbs.) which makes the average Blue Whale weight in pounds about 400,000 lbs.
Lets use an average human weight of 140 lbs.
400,000 / 140 = 2857.1428
So you get about 2857 people together on a scale and you have yourself an average weighing Blue Whale!

Could be worse. It might have been "Ice 9 kills blue whales."

African or European?

Thanks a lot, Obama

/BURN!

Wonder how the Global Warmists spin the fact that these whales died due to much later than normal ice buildup and displacement? Unusually late ice melt this year...refutes any Global Warming claim

I would suggest South American Bullet Ants, but that's only a personal preference.

My thoughts exactly.

Wait, the whales overdosed on Meth?

Highschool juniors (male) weigh more than that.

Moron or troll.  Which is it?

Quit wasting our time.

Needs a grammatical error or two to be more convincing.

Only in the Atlantic (according to the headline)

Mark Ratner: Lets use an average human weight of 140 lbs

now do it using average US weight

Just like at bar at closing time, all the blue whales just became a 4% less ugly.

Lenny_da_Hog: Could be worse. It might have been "Ice 9 kills blue whales."

Came for this, leaving sad about the whales and also Kurt Vonnegut.

Not to rain on the grief parade, but it's ~4% of the observed blue whale population. There are certainly many more of them out there. The Canadian Museum of Nature estimates a global population somewhere between 14 and 20 thousand. Still sucks though.

If you are ever in Ottawa you can walk beneath the skeleton of a juvenile blue whale in the Museum of Nature. The whale died in the 70s after being hit by a ship. She's about half as large as a full grown adult. It's pretty amazing.

216 now.

I thought we needed more ice for the polar bears. But then, we kill the blue whales. Either way, one species is at risk.

There's a life-size model of an adult in the Museum of Natural History in DC. I still remember how totally awestruck I was when I first saw it as a kid -- and all over again as an adult.

/This is what it sounds like when whales cry

Lenny_da_Hog: Could be worse. It might have been "Ice 9 kills blue whales."

I totally read the headline as " Ice 9 kills  blue whales near Newfoundland"

I agree that would be MUCH worse....

Cold_Sassy: FTFA:   ...they are not able to breath.  Spellcheck, anyone?

O_o Those words are all spelled correctly.

Mark Ratner: If 9 blue whales is 4% of the total Atlantic population, that means there are 225 blue whales.

It means there are that many in the North Atlantic population.  NOAA estimates that there are approximately 5,000 worldwide:

That does it....

- BAN ALL ICE -

Save the whales.

Winner.
