It doesn't matter how much money a person has, how smart someone is, or what they look like. There's always that guy who is completely captivated by fire.

Although this person was stupid//

Why indoors? Idiot.
Why are police approaching a fire? Idiots.

Police allege a 16-year-old boy set fire to the mattress out of boredom. He was arraigned Monday on charges of assault, arson and reckless endangerment and held without bail.

/Bored huh? Well, I'm sure you're not bored now you little coont. I hope they give him life without parole. He killed a a police officer, and it sounds like the other might die too. He should have thrown himself off the building if he was bored. What a pitiful excuse for a human being. Kill yourself, so we don't have to pay for you the rest of your life.

/  I agree, it was totally stupid to run into a burning building with no scba, no fire equipment at all.  It would have been different if it had been a "save my baby" situation, but they pretty much died for nothing. Very sad. Much like people who run into clouds of unknown chemical vapor to save someone, or into a pit where their brother or dad has just fallen down (overcome by fumes or lack of oxygen) and down they go...to rescue them, and are overcome themselves.  Happens all the time.  Sadly. Good intentions, not very good common sense.

/Example...ammonia fumes from a tanker, driver down, trooper runs right in....without thinking.   Sighs.

In New York, the fact that the victim was a Police Officer is one of the various conditions that could make it first degree.

That's my understanding as well. We just watched it in a training class a few weeks ago, and I did some digging into the video, and it appears to be a staged training video. Not that things like that don't really happen.

Really? They say a 16 year old didnt understand the implications of lighting a farking mattress on fire? Yeah, wtf is wrong with kids and their retarded parents? Little dipshiat and his horrible parents need to be executed. fark, when I was 16 i had things to do to keep me from being bored enough to light mattresses on fire like....a freaking job! I understand he's a minor, but he's 2 years, 2 YEARS from being considered an adult. Personally, I think at 16 you need to be considered an adult since at 16 you are trusted enough to drive. There is no logical or reasonable excuse for why this kid and his parents shouldn't be punished severely.

Warlordtrooper: Murder requires intent!

First degree does.  Second degree does, but without prior planning (manslaughter).  But third degree murder (negligent homicide) requires no intent at all.  Third degree murder was invented for cases exactly like this.  Someone already doing something felony stupid and causes a death in the process, still means murder.  I have no doubt MI prosecutors would charge this kid with third degree murder of an officer, arson, and as an adult.  In this state, 13 is old enough to get life in prison for murder.  We have a few in prison right now.

This.
Would they cut him slack if he ran the officer over while drunk?

I like to hope not. But this justice system in this country is soft and stupid. No ones held accountable for their actions, come up with excuses like made up mental disorders, or "he's just a minor." People today aren't even scared of going to prison, shiat they even go to prison on purpose for the damn luxury at tax payers expense. Things like torture and taking away prisoner rights and liberties would be a great way to make people think twice before doing stupid shiat. And more frequent and brutal executions, to keep prison population low and costs down.
