(USA Today)   Archie Comics to kill Archie in July. Well, a version of Archie. In fact, I think one of them is already a zombie. All I know is he likes to eat Betty and Veronica   (usatoday.com) divider line 41

Sad state of the industry when Archie Comics takes more risks and is more progressive of late than any of the other major publishers.

This is truly revolutionary. Can you imagine if DC or Marvel killed off one of their major characters? It's unprecedented!

Killing off the title character from a book is considered risky and progressive to you? What is this....I don't even...

That's fine. Just remember:

1. Chew with your mouth closed.
2. Avoid slurping, smacking, and blowing your nose.
3. Don't use your utensils like a shovel or as if you've just stabbed what you're about to eat.
4. Don't pick your teeth in bed.
5. Remember to use your napkin at all times.
6. Wait until you're done chewing to swallow. (The exception is if you're choking.)
7. Lick only one piece at a time.
8. Avoid slouching and don't place your elbows on the bed while eating (though it is okay to prop your elbows on the bed while conversing between courses.)
9. Instead of reaching across the bed for something, ask for it to be passed to you.
10. Always say 'excuse me' whenever you leave or blow your load.

Sex Criminals is a pretty darn good comic. Not my fave one, but really good. Time stopping nookie powers used for hijinks, including pooping in the boss' office.

/Rat Queens is the superior Image comic though.

If Stan Lee were editing Sex Criminals, he would have made sure the title of the book were the more alliterative "Fark Felons".

Sort of.  They had two timelines going, one in which Archie married Betty and one in which he married Veronica.  Dilton existed in only one of the two timelines, but knew about the other, and was being pursued by sinister characters...

I don't know what they did with that, ultimately.

Actually, Archie has a real audience thanks to the digests and their placement in grocery stores, drug stores, and places where more people than just the 300,000 fanboys who still read comics through the direct market ghetto would see them.

So, yeah, kids still read Archie, whether they find the digests or a parent or grandparent picks one up for them, or whether they stumble on the books thanks to Archie being an early adopter of digital.

Huh! Interesting. And yeah, I used to get the digests at the corner store when I was a kid, but didn't think that kids were really into comics nearly as much as they were 30 years ago, especially things like Archie as opposed to Pokemon or Swap Force or whatever.

I was looking into their numbers since someone posted a comment on the CNN article asking if anyone bothers to read them.  While Archie comic numbers aren't huge, almost all of their (5-6?) comics were selling something like 2500-3000 issues a month about a year ago.  There was also a mention that they had changed their strategy back around 2010 to put Archie comics in more locations like bookstores instead of in comic book stores and they between 2010-2012 they had something like a 400% increase in print sales and 1000% increase in e-book sales, so whoever is in charge there now is doing something right.

That's the comics, which is a low number, but mostly direct market, which isn't the Archie audience.

The Digests are selling roughly 50,000 per book per month on the newsstand, and as I mentioned, that's to people who generally wouldn't enter a comic shop.

And, oddly enough,, one of the guys currently running Archie is the guy who did that gay Archie play that Archie Comics put a stop to about a decade ago.
