For all the cache I thought hockey had on this site, I'm kinda surprised this has been the first hockey thread in days. That said, as a Stars fan I've been hopeful and almost confident. On top of that, this Stars team is actually one of the most entertaining teams to watch. fark you desert dogs!

I also think Dallas could beat the Blues. Bad matchup for them, almost like the matchup between the Mavs and Warriors back in 07. Speed vs age. As for the Nucks, it must suck to see such a fall from grace. At least when the Sharks choke they don't devolve into a non playoff team. What happened?

That's true but I'd think the Blues would rather play Phoenix at this point. St. Louis might lose the top seed though, so my whole point might be moot. As a Stars fan I'd rather play the Blues than the Ducks or Sharks. In all reality it doesn't matter if I can actually see my team in the playoffs after a 5 year drought.

I've been rooting for the Stars to make it this year- I like the team as individuals.

No, no, no.... The Leafs being eliminated is a sign of mid-winter, usually somewhere around the solstice.

The way it's usually explained around here is the Leafs falling before the Leaves forming.
We still need some voodoo priestess to excise the ghost of the Toronto's original Fat Bastard, ol' Harold Ballard and let some of Tim Leiweke's magic rain down upon the Buds.  Maybe this spring.

How wacky would that be to see the Blues lose the top seed, especially to Colorado? Stars v. Avs would be a hell of a series, speed against speed. But I doubt the Avs will take number one. 3 games left and 2 points back, there's a chance but I don't see it happening. Not with them playing the Sharks and Ducks to close out the season.

Vancouver is at a very interesting crossroads.

Do they pull the plug and blow the whole team up and begin the rebuild now? Or do they trade off pieces like Kesler and Edler to try and get the goaltender and defence they need?

If they look at Calgary, they may consider the blow up. Calgary ran the careers of Iginla and Kiprusoff right to empty and now the cupboards are pretty bare. We're in for a few more rough seasons.

Then again, they could look at Edmonton and witness what a rebuild gone horribly wrong can look like.

I'm interested to see what they do in the off-season.

I wouldn't mind getting the Ducks so much. We've been good against them in the regular season. The Blues may be playing poorly right now but they still scare me.

Our lack of PP scoring and inability to hang on to leads past the 1st intermission scare me as well, but we are far and above where I expected us to be at the start of the season.

Looking forward to seeing how this plays out.

/go stars!

I'm assuming Torts would be soon to follow Gillis out the door. Even as relatively craptastic the 'Nucks forwards beyond the Sedins are, Torts leaving and being replaced by Random Asshole automatically increases their goals per game average by like .5.

Mackenzie was saying this morning that both contracts have half-price out clauses for the club.  Still not cheap, but cheaper.

No way they make him a GM or president. He has clearly shown over the past two years that he suffers from macular degeneration to the point that even in slow motion, on giant HD television screens, he can't tell what has happened in a hockey game.

lol, good point.  I'm not sure how this would work, although technically there is no current President of Hockey Ops in MLSE, but how do they bring someone in at that level without a clean slate south of there.  Nonis still has some sway with Leiweke, and his best get of the last off season spent most of this one on his ass with a chewed up ankle.  Is Boland the cure for what ails, no, but he could have been the difference in a few games enough to tip the playoff balance.  We will never know.
Even Carlyle, hasn't burned all his cred yet, although if someone's going, I'm good if it's him.  I've been critical of several of his decisions along the way, his fondness of a few of the 'grinders' is admirable, but his hate for some of the 'softies' like Reimer and Lupal, really piss me off.  I'd bet more than a few in the room are also pissed off. And there you go for why they come out and play like they don't care when the really need to come out and play like they do.

I guess Johnny needs to break out the popcorn, then.

Columbus also clinched tonight, beating the Stars 3-1 in the continuation of the March 10 game. The Coyotes still have a chance to sneak in to the playoffs.

They replayed the Columbus v Dallas game where Peverly collapsed tonight. CBJ started with a 1-0 lead since that was the score when the game was stopped. That goal was scored by Nathan Horton, who was scratched tonight due to injury. Yes, he gets a goal in a game he didn't play.

Mathematically true, realistically false. It's hard to win games when you can't hold a farking lead.

Gillis.. the only GM in the league who can trade away TWO starting goalies and get nothing in return. Not even one starting goalie back.

In the statistical oddity department, Chicago won a game ending in the overtime period for the 1st time this season Wednesday night. They had lost their previous 7 games that ended in OT.

Rev.K: Vancouver is at a very interesting crossroads.

Here's my conspiracy theory:

Aquilini has gotten involved in the last couple of years and is Jerry Jonesing this team. He's not a hockey guy. He's making hockey decisions. He's not letting the hockey guys make the hockey decisions.

Rumour is that Aquilini wanted Torts after firing Vigneault. Gillis said no. Aquilini overruled him and hired Torts anyway. Gillis is furious, and has basically treated this whole season as "Fine. If you won't let me run the team the way I think it should be run, you don't get a team."

Every decision and acquisition Gillis has made since the hiring of Torts -- including tossing off two #1 goalies for used puck bags -- almost hints at a scorched Earth policy. Gillis wanted out and he did everything in his power to subtly-but-not-so-subtly orchestrate that outcome.

I have no idea what the team should do going forward, but I don't like Torts and I don't like the current core. They've had a good run, 10-15 years of solid competitiveness. Now it's time to blow things up, tank for a few seasons, and rebuild from the draft (but do it properly, the Chicago and Pittsburgh way, not terribly the Edmonton way).

I'm a solid believer in the ebb and flow of sports franchises. You have to hit rock bottom and endure years of ineptitude and failure in order to hit dizzying heights and sweet sweet championship success. The worst thing is middle of the pack -- perpetual mediocrity -- whereby you never get better or worse, you just maintain the status quo. like the Leafs.
