As someone who is really, REALLY sad that I have to put my cat down on Thursday morning, I am extremely interested in this story. In the end though...I don't know if i'd actually want to do it. My cat is super awesome and I'm going to miss him tons, but there are many other kitties that need good homes. By cloning pets, i'd feel bad about all those animals that could be saved. After all, if you're the kind of person that would care enough to do something like this, chances are you rock as a pet parent. Others need your love.

/wow, this is longer than intended.

Wish they had something like this for hamburgers.  Once in a while I get a really good one and wish I had a way of duplicating it.

Imagine that'd be a bit difficult after it's eaten though, unless you want to get gross.

Yes! We have resolved the nature-nurture and we know with decent precision it is 60/40. There remains some debate about the precise parameters and nurture seems to impact some traits (like personality) greater than other traits (like height). But the fact is that it will not be the same dog any more than when it comes time to clone humans--which will happen--you'll get the same person.

Oh, for the love of god, do people not even do basic goddamned Google searches when verifying stories?  That's literally Hwang Woo-suk's lab... the guy that outright fabricated so many completely imaginary experiments that he's almost by himself the entire reason that it's really damned hard for anyone from South Korea to get published anywhere anymore.

He's a known, convicted fraud and con artist, and has essentially been run out of the actual scientific community on a rail.  That's how clearly, obviously fake this is.

I mean, I know it's the Mirror, but what the hell, random fact-checking intern?

Sure, but can you imagine what it would be worth to be able to clone the most flavorful, succulent puppies from the best genetic stock?

I'm all for cloning but it should be used for useful things like making zoos more exiting, repopulating endangered animals, and creating an army of super soldiers not pets. You won't even get the same pet, sure it will look the same but the personality will be different and that is what you would have loved about your pets anyway. In short your pet is dead and I want to see Woolly Mammoths and Dinosaurs at my local zoo, also bald assassins.

This interests me a fair bit. While I wouldn't really want/nor expect a complete cloned personality, I regret fixing my Corgi and not breeding him. Something like this could give me a chance for a redo. Albeit I doubt the clone's markings would be identical, the coloring genes seem too flighty to show the same way even in a clone.

But as you said, 60/40 so it would be different but very similar. It might not be exact, but would share some personality traits and tendencies. Particularly when raised in the same place by the same people.

That said, I have concerns about longevity. I don't think clones live as long as naturally born creatures yet.

So let me get this straight..... Pets are already overpopulating and being sent to shelters and being euthanized because there are so many of them that no one wants..... And these idiots are talking about cloning pets now? Sure, how about Japan starts cloning people while they are at it.

Especially if you didn't get the DNA when the critter was healthy. Some late life issue means that the puppy would have some of the problems that you're trying to fix. It would work great for things like losing an eye due to dog fighting.
