The slideshow thing seems hopelessly broken.

I just looked at all 30,000 of them. I can't say I'm impressed.

after looking through all those pictures I noticed something, I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once. Where we lived was all farmers. The blacks worked for the farmers. I hoed cotton with them. I'm with the blacks, because we're white trash. We're going across the field.... They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, 'I tell you what: These doggone white people'-not a word!... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues.

Since the NYC DoR is governmental (i.e., public) I dunno there is a "property" issue at hand. That said, they seem to all be viewable at the nyc page at http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/gallery/home.shtml without watermark.

OK, maybe only a tiny tiny fraction.

In the first picture - the tail of the United plane you can see part of a word "AINLINER"

Does anyone know what the full word was?

I can only think "MAINLINER", but that doesn't make sense to me.

That's an awesome archive, but every image I looked at (20 or so) is watermarked.  Is there a secret to finding unwatermarked images?  There is an order form to purchase prints/digital files, so that may be the only way to get unadulterated images:   http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/gallery/orderform.shtml  NYC prices too.

Grrr.  This was supposed to be in reference to ArcadianRefugee's post regarding no watermarks at http://www.nyc.gov/html/records/html/gallery/home.shtml  but I did it wrong.  I am new and/or stupid.  Probably and.

For 30,000 year old photos, some of those look pretty good.

"Mainliner", a generic name given to aircraft which flew the Mainline (flight) routes
"Mainliner", a specific prefix name given to a number of aircraft operated by United Airlines and possibly others (ex. Mainliner New York, Mainliner Washington, etc.)

I see no porch roof. Problem solved.

Now the PORCH, on the other hand, that looks a bit treacherous.

Why aren't archives like this downloadable?  Irritating.

You know what?  Nevermind.  Time to write a damned script and let a robot pull them all down.

The first picture is exactly why I don't like airports being inside the city. Also, the planes making their landing approach over my house every 10 minutes when I'm trying to watch TV with the windows open.

But mostly the safety thing, one goes down while landing in the city, and it's not pretty.

Not as scary as that one that takes off over the beach in somewhere like Malaysia or something, the one where the planes are at about 30 ft elevation when they cross the highway...

Google knows all.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainliner

Mainliner or  Mainliners may refer to:

"Mainliner", a specific prefix name given to a number of aircraft operated by United Airlines and possibly others (ex. Mainliner New York, Mainliner Washington, etc.)

I love old pictures like this, especially when they are well labeled.

This area looks largely the same, even the crummy little building on the left is still there.

Well, they added color to the world at some point, that's a major change...

it is actually nice to be able to look that far back and see things that have lasted. When I lived in Arizona, I worked in like the second oldest building in Phoenix, and it was 'maybe' from 1890... No heritage there. Utah is pretty good about having towns where you can see the old town Main Street look. I like it.

Check the ship's captain murdered by crew in the linked 'pretty grisly' section. (Only if you haven't just eaten)

Except for all the watermarks that make it almost impossible to enjoy the pics, thanks!
