I'll settle for Peter Dinklage Joffrey-slapping George R.R. Martin for ten episodes.

At this point, I think I'd be happy with Martin focusing on the TV series and someone else ghost-writing the books. A ghost writer will probably finish much faster and will be willing to let an editor cut out the bullshiat.

There's material from book 3 they're still covering in season 4.
They'll have plenty of material for at least another couple of seasons, such as where whores go and so on.

I'll take that and melding Game of Thrones with Deadwood to get the latter's 4th Season.

They said a couple of years ago that they were splitting book 3 in to two seasons and were planning on doing the same thing to book 4. They were trying to buy time for GRRM to write some material... but lets be honest here, it took him 6 years to crap out the last book and he still has two more to do. HBO can only drag their feet for so long, but the producers know how GRRM wants to story to end. GRRM has said that the series and the books may have different outcomes because of it.

Also, based on what I've read about books 4 and 5 (and I've 100% spoiled myself, so I think I know everything plotwise), there isn't nearly enough interesting material to make each of those books 2 full seasons long. That's 4 full seasons for those 2 books, which are considered by everyone to be the worst books up to now. How is that going to work?

2014-04-08 06:06:44 PM
1 book per season is not their goal, and never has been.

They will tell the story in the time it needs, whether they borrow from multiple books, remove items, add, etc.

We must not get hung up on numbers. There is plenty of material for at least 3 seasons yet. GRRM will finish TWOW before then I'm sure, which will buy us at least one more season before we have any collusion. And even then, the last book will be so close to completion the material will be available to the producers for them to continue.

Meanwhile, I will be giving HBO my money for the foreseeable future.

I don't know if there's enough interesting material in book 4 to make a single episode out of it.  It's awful.

They originally said 7 seasons which maps to this:

Season 4 : second half of 3 + bits of 4/5
Season 5: 4/5 + bits of Winds
Season 6: Winds of Winter
Season 7: Dreams of Spring

If they do 8 seasons then split season 5 into 2 parts

I thought the suggestion was that they would turn books 4 AND 5 in to two seasons, interweaving the separate narratives together.

They'll just condense a little less. More scenery, keep more dialog, etc.
Books 4 and 5 (except the last bit of 5) happen concurrently, I doubt they'll handle it that way on TV.
So, combine 4 and 5, then split them back up chronologically, add in some gratuitous boobs and presto, there's plenty to fill four 10-episode seasons.

Actually, they were stretching out book 3 to 2 seasons, then condensing the hell out of books 4 and 5 because there just isn't that much interesting stuff.

The showrunners already have the outline of the rest of the story, and will proceed with it, whether GRRM is ready or not. HBO has already said they are not going to drag their feet for him.

I can't wait for the exciting scenes of Brienne wandering around asking random people, "Have you seen a pretty maid, about 16? ....   No?  OK....... Have you seen a pretty maid, about 16?..... No?  Ok......  Have you seen...."

Exciting stuff.

Said it before, and I'm not the first person to suggest this, but GRR Martin needs to have books 4 and 5 re-edited, condensed into a single volume (with everything made chronological), and re-released, and then re-brand the originals as expanded editions or something.

Martin has plenty of new material, what he needs is an editor to trim it down and make a cohesive story out of it.

If Martin went back to "re-edit" books 4 and 5, he'd end up with four books in place of two.

The Brienne of Tarth subplot is easily the most boring part of Book 4.  Just chapter after chapter of her aimlessly wandering around Westeros.  I hope HBO finds a ways to make it interesting (or at least trims it down a lot).

Putting 4 and 5 into one season would be possible.

Get rid of the characters who add nothing to the story, cut Brienne's endless searching to a few minutes every other episode, and condense the page long descriptions of food into a 5 second pan over a table.

There's a lot of fluff in the books that could easily be chopped.

You remember the scene in last week's episode where Sansa looks around her breakfast table for a few seconds? GRRM's original draft of that was 36 pages.

The man has to stop writing when he's hungry, or at least keep a bowl of Fritos or something near the typewriter.

If you look at HBO's programming history, I don't think they've ever gone more than 7 seasons on any drama, no matter how successful. They've gotten pretty good at getting out before the audience gets sick of it and leaving them wanting more.

And trust me, if they drag out the worst two books of the series and throw in a prequel, the audience will say fark it. There is a core group of characters they care about, and 3 years of tangient stories won't hold their interest.

If that happens, It will get cancelled.

HBO is not making this show for the hardcore book fans. They want to reach the widest audience possible, and stalling to give fat boy more time to go to conventions and put off writing doesn't cut it.

If HBO can think of a more effective way to position the characters I'm sure they will. As it stands I think GRRM has done a pretty good job.

The show has almost completely skipped the whole Prince who was promised plot so it will be interesting to see how they deal with that.

I don't think we'll see GoT prequels before they finish the series...the actors and actresses are getting older fast, contracts are difficult to renogiate and any hiatus could completely ruin the success of the show.  GRRM may not like it, but I doubt that HBO will care if they have to pass him up eventually.

Episode 1: shiatty newcaster yells at young moronic woman for being like all other women. Jack McCoy shows up and says "do the news, but BETTER." shiatcaster takes this to heart and starts yelling about an E.P., so now it's esoteric. A bunch of random young pretty faces get promoted. Random intern just happens to know someone with the inside track at Enron Bros or something and that everything's going horribly wrong. shiatcaster and English woman take all the credit, not before Jack McCoy says it was his idea to "do the news better" and they "just decided" to hire the kid six months ago who knew someone with the inside track on a developing story that just happened today. We all know Daenarys is going to kill Jon Snow in front of the heart tree anyway. Nothing really important is going to happen with anyone else, except MAYBE Tyrion who might still be alive and whichever Targaryen he brings to Westeros is probably going to get assassassinated by Arya who is rul mean now.

They aren't staying anywhere close to the books anymore except for major plot points. Theon Greyjoy doesn't show up as Reek until Book 5 but we spent half the season with him last year.
