I sang a solo Glass piece for a competition once, on the suggestion of my voice instructor.  I really resented her insistence on that.  It had like all of three notes.  Not exactly the best piece to show off your vocal talent.  Suffice it to say I didn't win anything.

I listened to Music in Twelve Parts all the way through the other day and enjoyed it.

Haven't made it through La Monte Young's Well Tuned Piano yet.

I understand the hate for repeating music from Glass/Reich/etc. but I love the stuff.

"Good morning, Marge. I was thinking about how much I enjoy your interests, so I wandered over to that theater you went to last night and I bought tickets to their entire season. Look! Mostly Madrigals. Hey, that might be good. Oh! Oh! An Evening With Philip Glass. Just an evening?!? Voices of the Elderly. Mmmmm."

Something about repeated rhythm gets the booty shakin'. Humanity loves it. There is a reason (Even though you HAVE heard it but maybe not know what it's called) why people really take to the Amen Break or the Motorik beat. It sets the foundation for a repetitive groove, and that's what people like. In fact, FTFA: Margulis knew that 90 percent of the music we listen to is music we've heard before...Which is no different than what modern DJ's and record producers know to produce an earworm that will make you tap your steering wheel and buy crap you don't need.

Having read only the FARK headline... I'm surprised. Over-repetition is one of my least favorite things in music. Especially if the repetition is a lyrical fragment...

I was prepared to believe this without much thought (after all, music from the classical period is full of repeats the modern performers mostly ignore) but Berio? Really?  The only way to make the experience of listening to his music worse would be to repeat it.

Berio, not even once.

Because pop songs are 3 minutes long, but all the tracks on this album are 1 minute long, so you have to play them three times to get a full pop song.

Or, if you're an insufferable academic or a member of the Kronos Quartet, "performing with conviction."
