I am voting we give the death penalty to people who do horseshiat like this "study" and call it science.

The south is more open handed with the needle and therefore has higher ratio of normal people who did bad shiat to real monsters.

Ned Stark: The south is more open handed with the needle and therefore has higher ratio of normal people who did bad shiat to real monsters.

This was my first thought, too.

South: thinner-skinned
North: thicker-skinned

That's it. In the south, it may be more common to extend small courtesies, but when you don't they get mighty uppity. In the north, they don't extend but also don't expect. I mean, hell, if you stopped and apologized every time you bumped into someone in Manhattan, you'd never get anywhere.

A guy at the office commented that his southern chivalry was met with disgust up north. Call a woman "ma'am" and you might as well have called her "biatch."

Courtesy is bred into us down here. An old holdover from days of yore. I still participate because that's how I was raised and I like helping people out with the little things.

The study doesn't surprise me at all. Its something we were instilled to perform. I'd trust a dying man more than the living, you see.

Because "ma'am" is used as a term of servility (you call any female in a superior position "ma'am", just as you call any male superior "sir", regardless of age*) and because one is taught to always respect one's elders, many younger women equate "ma'am" with older women; this occurs even in the south. In the north, it seems moreso, and the whole women/age issue comes up more often when you refer to a woman as "ma'am".

Mind you, this (the irritation) seems to go away in more genteel areas of the north. Cape Cod, for example, not only accepts "ma'am" as suitable but frequently is happily stunned at its use by "outsiders"**.

* I've worked catering halls and had to deal with Bar/Bat Mitzvahs. It didn't matter if the person you were speaking to was 8yo or 80, it was "ma'am" and "sir".
** and by that I mean you filthy tourists :)

That's on "y'all". (Pardon the southern.) Down here we just say that to women regardless of status, at least when being respectful of person.

Black, white, polka-dot, older or younger, if you're female we call you ma'am. Perhaps it does carry patriarchal overtones, but I'm a guy so I don't completely know.

Although "sir" does tend to follow an order, at least in my mind. Mostly for significantly older men and specifically for status. Think proletariat addressing bourgeois.

For business its sir and ma'am, unless you know them personally. Then its either-or, depending on status and circumstance.

/must be nice not having social convention
