How do you know it's spring?
The Leafs are out

/old, sad, tired joke, but oddly true every fricken year.

The upside is I'll be able to watch Montreal in the playoffs on CBC (for one round at least....)

Looks like Montreal will be the lone Canadian team to make the SCPs...ouch.

Now, as a Wild fan, FFS St. Louis, get back to winning so we can avoid a 1st Round matchup.

I don't know what type of season is more satisfying -- the Leafs having a terrible season and missing the playoffs by a mile, the Leafs looking good for the majority of the season, then collapsing late and barely missing the playoffs, or the Leafs playing well all season, only to get crushed in the first round.

All of these have their charms of course, and it's thoughtful for the organization to mix things up for the fans, but this season was a good one.  In first place in their division for much of the year, winning games, giving hope to all their fans -- and collapsing right around Valentine's Day.  A fine vintage indeed!

I dunno.  Stunning late 3rd period collapse in game 7 is awful tough to top.  How do you top that?  Maybe go the Steve Smith route next time?

Can anybody explain why there isn't an "e" next to Carolina in the standings? I don't see any way they can beat Columbus - they can't beat the tiebreakers, even if they win the rest of their games and Columbus loses all theirs.

The problem with the Leafs is that they simply have no toughness.  Yeah Orr can fight people, but for what?  Phaneuf is cowardly, and Clarkson doesn't care anymore.  They really need to sign Bolland to a long-term extension and bring in more players like him.

If Carolina goes 4-0-0 and Columbus goes 0-4-0, Carolina is in.  They'll have the same points, and Carolina will have more regulation/overtime wins.

Yup... I missed that. If the Wings win tonight, the wildcard is going to be a whole lot bigger climb for those teams still trying to get in, Columbus still needs to get a couple more games to feel safe, though.

Being a Toronto sports fan is suffering. Watch the Raptors get clobbered in the first round, watch the Jays collapse into another losing record. Watch TFC go down the tubes as Dafoe mails it in. It's all happening because it's Toronto. No other reason.

Having experienced this type of defeat with the Cubs in 2008, I can tell you that this is the most soul crushing type of loss. Especially if the team is built with a "win this year" mindset without planning for next year.

The Leafs need a wholesale shake-up in the off-season. Every player should be available for trade with the exception of Rielly, Bernier and Clarkson (the latter only because of the albatross of a contract that no other team will touch, even with some salary retained).

Keep telling yourself that.  If you had been paying attention you would have noticed sno and I were constantly talking about Torontos defensive problems which, surprise surprise, was their undoing.  Your precious advanced stats didn't factor in at all, it was bad defense plain and simple.

Just to add a bit, the Leafs are 11th in goals for and 26th in goals against.  Two players with 30+ goals, two more with 20+(would be three if Bozak had a full season) and two more within 1 or 2 of 20 and a defenseman with 10.  Like I said, bad defense.

The worst part is, I have zero confidence that they won't do exactly that.  In fact, they'll probably give him a Clarksonesque contract, then either give Carlyle a bonus to boost his spirits or replace him with Tortorella.

Possession stats are telling and they underscore the problem with the Leafs this season: The Maple Leafs' Collapse is a Victory for Rationality.

To be sure, the team is horrible at defence. The Leafs needs to have their forwards play a solid two-way game and bring in some responsible stay-at-home defenders.

That was a great article I read yesterday.

Possession stats will help the D spending monstrous chunks of time in their own zone, but there's more that needs to be "fixed".

Phaneuf is not a first pairing D. He's a solid 2nd pairing, but they are playing him like he's an elite 1st, and it's because they have nobody else to put there.  He also plays the "hardest" minutes, and his zone starts further highlight that.

Gunnarson I've always felt is very overrated by Toronto.  He too is not a first pairing D.

Franson and Gleason are just terrible, and need to go.

Reils and Gardy are the future, and need to stay together.  Both have tremendous upside.

So what do you have?  A solid foursome for your 2nd and 3rd pairings, and a massive hole for the first pairing that really, cannot be fixed for next season.

The cap will be around $71 million, and we have $49 committed next season.  So $22 million to spend.

Kessel, Lupul, Clarkson, JVR, Bozie, Naz and HodORR are the only forwards under contract next season.

So first line, a 2nd line centre, and two garbage bags.  Money will need to be spent on 2nd line wingers, and most of a 3rd and 4th line.

On D it's worse.  Dion, Gleason, Gunnarson, and Reilly are locked up, with Gardy as a RFA, who is going to command a hefty raise from his $875.  Maybe in the range of $20 for 5 years (Cam Fowler money) is what he will ask for.

That leaves them with about $18 million for six forwards, one or two defensemen, and a goalie.  Ugh.

Pray they don't give Bolland $5 million.  If they do, this team is destined to repeat the same crap again.

I'm hoping they keep Kulemin(albeit at a reduced price), he's a solid two-way forward and isn't afraid to throw his weight around.  If they bring Komarov back and stick McClement in between them I think they've got a rock solid 3rd line.  I like Lupul on the second line but he's got to put in a full season otherwise Kadri is going to get hung out on his own again.

The defense, yeah no argument here.  The free agent pool this year doesn't look good for blueliners so that leaves draft day to bolster it.  What sucks is Franson decided this would be a perfect time to throw his talent into the shiatter so he's got zero value in any potential sign and trade(and God help us if they decide McDavid is disposable).

Agreed on Kulemin.  I've always liked the guy, and he's a good 3rd line winger.  Maybe pair him more with Kadri next season on the 2nd line?  I wonder if Uncle Leo would want to come back?  He would be a nice pairing with McClement and Clarkson on the 3rd line.  I don't want to see that abyss anywhere near Lupul and Kadri on the 2nd line.

As for the D, yeah, I was just looking at that as well.  There's nothing much out there right now that could help us, and Franson suddenly stopped playing.  He's an RFA, but I would be surprised if we offered him anything.  Then again, this is Nonis, and he's awful.

That means Nonis will do something stupid and trade away a Kadri or a Gardy, to get "bigger" on D, which will be a disaster.

Leo has expressed interest in coming back to the NHL and until July 1 Toronto has first dibs on him so there's a chance he'll be back next season.  Clarkson just needs to get his head on straight and stop trying to do too much.  Toronto brought him in to play his shift within five feet of the opposing goal, not every farking position at once.  As for Nonis, cripes who knows?  He can't be stupid enough to let Jake go or trade Naz but every time I say that about a Leafs GM they go and prove me wrong.

I forgot we retained his rights until then.  Hmm...maybe that's a real possibility he comes back to us?  We could use him.

As for Clarkson, I agree, but he always seems to fall down on just about every shift, or lose the puck somehow.  I don't know if he can ever get it back to the point where he has some value out there.

I got a geek question that hopefully someone in here might be able to help me out with.

I recently bought a Chromecast. While it's been fun doing basic YouTube crap, I've been exhausting all options to find a way to stream some Bruins games onto my TV.

While there are only a few games left in the season and then it won't matter because all the playoff games are on, I was seeing if anyone knew a work around or something that would help.

I should also note that I'm talking about casting from my Galaxy tablet, not a normal PC browser.
