Well, He is probably going to take the north pole soon.  Then he will claim some northern parts of Canada. I doubt the US would back up Canada though. It wouldn't be our problem.

But once he takes the moon, then we will send him a sternly worded letter even without the UN's approval.

Freaking Rooskies are all a bunch of thieving liars.  Problem is, the Ukrainians aren't much different.  They are all wannabe gypsies.  Entire cultures built upon stealing from everyone else.

Yeah, if the Ukraine government hadn't been so corrupt there probably wouldn't have been the civil unrest that has led to this.

OTOH, when Russia seized Crimea I thought to myself that there's no way Russia hadn't been planning that for months and were just waiting for the right opportunity.  Given that it seems Russia is sending dissenters into Ukraine, they might have been part of the protests all along.

Technically maybe but what are odds of actually doing it? Maybe better than the Ukraine's but lets not get the expectations too high. Sending a $50 check would be 'backing them up' but not very useful.

I don't know about fighting him.

Covertly arming and training his opposition, though...maybe that comes a little sooner.

If we can't stop him we might try to make it very costly for him.

And after all, what's the worst that could happen?

There are nice people everywhere.
If we start defending countries because they are "nice" then we'll get sucked into stopping Russia's takeover of Europe before too long.

Canada might be next door, but it isn't worth catching a bullet over.

Listen, the problem is that Putin is ready for us in Ukraine. We aren't going to put boots on the ground for Ukraine. We just don't give that big of a shiat about Ukraine. And Half the people in Ukraine did vote for the deposed president, so Russia is partially right that half the country is partially ok with joining Russia. And he's ready for the steps we would take - sanctions and whatnot. The place we could hit him most would be energy exports, and even if Europe turned to other sources, Russia would just sell to China, which they are planning to do anyway.

Nope, there is no win in Ukraine.

They used to have a pretty good army.  Then their last President, who happened to be a Putin man, conveniently gutted the army and used the funds to line his pockets and those of his cronies.  Now Ukraine has 40,000 volunteers affectionately known as the Tread-Greaser Battalion.

You do realize that Canada is included in USNORTHCOM, right? In other words, Canada is included in the US military's home defense area and for all practical purposes would be considered part of the US in the event of a defensive conflict (whether they like it or not)

This line still drives me nuts.  Ukraine was in dire straits after the fall of the USSR.  Many Soviet nuclear scientists hadn't been paid in months and there was no guarantee that that would change.  Plenty of rouge nations and terrorist organizations were lined up waiting to pay for nuclear material.  Ukraine wasn't able to maintain or secure the stockpile they had.  Getting rid of their nukes was absolutely the right call.  There is simply no rational argument otherwise.

But in hindsight, they were fools, because they trusted that they would be left alone if they gave them up. We coluded with Russia to assure them that they would be respected as their own country.  We did, but Russia screwed them.  And like the honorable people we are, we did...?

they were fools to trust us and Russia.

I am pretty sure the USA would not want to see a belligerent Russia take over the USA's HADCS or  North Warning System.

In any case, the Arctic Rangers would probably make mincemeat of the Rooskies. 3000 Inuit kids with rifles, snowmobiles, and a license to kill white people? That's scary.

Yeah, it is basically a bad idea to mess with Canada.  Their national sport is basically running around beating each other up with sticks.  Then when it gets cold outside, they strap knives to their feet and keep doing it.
