I'd rather watch this gif over and over and over instead of jaden smith as karate kid.

Give up Will. Your son is not talented or charismatic. His only facial expression is a mix of mild confusion and severe constipation. He's not going to be a movie star. Maybe he can be a Grand Wizard of Scientology or something.

Will this one have any actual, you know, karate in it?

I think Dave Holmes summed it up perfectly based on Jaden's performance in "After Earf":
"In Jaden Smith, we are watching the first person to become a movie star because it came up on the chore wheel"

I'll be cheering for Johnny in this one.

The real question is who is going to play Mr. Sato in the reboot?

So, it was like "take your kid to work day", but he got a paycheck too?

And  that was supposed to help him grow up?

I liked the reboot. Mostly for Jackie Chan.

The line to pummel Jaden is long and distinguished. Almost as long as the line to beat up Willow.

Seriously fark that Karate Kid reboot. Every time that piece of shiat movie tricks me when I'm going through whats on tv, I always think its the classic one and get disappointed.

Same thing happens with that terrible Total Recall reboot (which I know was closer to the original story). I'm expecting Arnold and freaks on Mars, I get Colin Farrell whining.

Making a movie for his son to star in so he can 'grow up'?

That's really....massively.....stupid.

Jackie Chan has plenty of awesome movies, like Legend of Drunken Master and Rumble in the Bronx, but this was not a good Jackie Chan movie. Those movies are great since the focus is on the crazy stunts and fight scenes.

Thats not why I liked him in this one. He took a back seat to the action and focused on his dramatic parts. I was moved during his drunken rampage on the car.

Moments do not make a movie a good movie. The reboot was awful because it wasn't Karate, it had a terrible actor and an even worse plot. If they just made it without the kid it would have been a better story overall.
If Will Smith wants his kid to grow up, Will Smith needs to grow up first and not waste people's time and money on vanity projects.

the pinkett-smith kids have to be some of the most unfortunate-looking hollywood sprogs yet spawned. even with their pedigree and bank accounts, these kids are going to have a hard time making a go of the celebrity thing when the first reaction to their rodent-like features is to jump on a chair and swat at them with a broom.

Wolf892: Did anyone notice the mistake the movie title made by implying "Karate" was the martial art that the "kid" would learn when in fact the movie takes place in China (not Japan) and he learns Gong Fu from his teacher instead?
That seems like a pretty obvious and somewhat racist mistake...

In the movie, Jaden claims to know karate, and gets his ass whupped. I never thought they were being racist, i thought it was a purposeful mocking of Karate as inferior to Wudang style.

It wasn't terrible, honestly, and my kid loved it.  Even Jaden wasn't THAT annoying in it, though I would have preferred someone else.

The way I see it, I love the original Karate Kid movies.  Most of them, anyway.  They were basically every 80's adolescent movie wrapped into one 90 minute package.  Training montage, elderly foreign man to be your mentor, scrappy young loser overcomes and even gains the respect of his tormentors...  But I know they aren't high art.  They were pretty silly movies, and I think everyone that watched them and was even involved with them know that.  So I'm not so precious about them that I don't think they can be remade.

That said, it did bug me that they kept the same name.  Yeah, they were looking for name recognition, I get that.  And the Kung Fu Kid just sounds weird and somehow racist in a way.  But really, for better or worse (mostly worse), most Americans associate any martial art with "karate," as if it's a blanket term.  So I just rolled with it.

I'm not saying it makes sense. To my ear, for whatever reason, it sounds like a racist nickname they would given an Asian outlaw in the old west.
