Sure they can. You just need enough of it to melt the hard drive.

I've been tempted towards arson instead of cleaning my apartment before. I understand this guy and appreciate his dedication and follow-through.

Why not? They're in the computer, aren't they?

/So hot right now.

Similarly, I've been tempted to set a few computers on fire during my life.

FTA: The officer filled out paperwork for the man to be hospitalized under the state's Baker Act, according to the report, describing him as "a danger to himself and others."

I'm sorry, but...Is there anybody in Fla. who doesn't fit that description?

Hell, you don't even need to melt it. If it's spinning rust, you just need to warp the disks a bit.

I don't know what it would take to disable an SSD.

I just spray a little Raid in all the tiny holes and slots. Seems to work fine. Smells, tho.

A Raid enema.  That's a novel approach.

Based on my experience, all it takes to disable an SSD is trying to use it*.

We've had to replace several SSDs on our new IBM bladeservers, while the ones with real hard drives keep churning along.

This one time I lived in an apartment in Buffalo and after a few months my roommate and I decided to meet the downstairs neighbor. Sweet woman, although the 200 candles all over her mantel, walls, tables etc. were a bit of a terrifying surprise, especially considering the black burn marks on the walls.

IMHO there will always be Homo sapiens completely captivated by fire. Sucks for their apartment neighbors....

Turning off the power is another good way to kill them.

CSB: I had bed bugs once and, contrary to most peoples experience, got rid of them fairly easily after a single self-administered treatment. My secret was, after spraying, going around the entire infected room with one of those big lighters you use to light a grill or fireplace or something and just burning the shiat out if everyplace the bugs were or might have been.

So, you know, don't go too hard on this guy.

If you can't use the computer, the bugs won't be an issue, amirite?

They even do mind control if they get in your ear! Forget ear worms, brain ants are way worse.

Agreed.

I have to quell the urge to light my workstation on fire on a daily basis.

/you're getting a new computer they said

I'm pretty sure you can kill cockroaches with fire.

Maybe not Asian cockroaches. They can fly away and if you try to burn them out, you'll just burn yourself out like the peasant who tried to get rid of the Lutin in the old French nursery tale.

Those computer-eating crazy ants could be killed with fire also, but then they'd just migrate to all your other computers and phones and things.

All in all, fire is very seldom a solution for tech problems. On the contrary, your computer needs cooling and may work better on ice.

2014-04-07 04:56:23 PM
They can if you try hard and believe in yourself.

2014-04-07 05:37:14 PM
Sure they can. No more computer = no more computer bugs ;)

Microwave it for a minute or two. Or the old standard for VERY secure data destruction. A flower pot and a batch of thermite.

For some bugs fire is the only solution.

Like if you accidentally install Norton Anti Virus. Fire's the only way to be sure.
