I have no idea either.  Too young to go though, so that's pretty shiatty.

Daughter of Bob Geldof, who organized Live Aid and was in "The Wall", among other things (and honestly I don't know what the other things are).

He wrote some annoying Christmas song too.

Peaches Geldof was in The Wall?

Whats with famous people and strange names...

The Upper Classes have all the good names. They can name their eldest son John for seven hundred years without a qualm.

The Gentry ape the Upper Classes but have a longer and thus weirder list of names, mostly coined from the maiden names of their mothers or buried in antiquity, seeing as this class of people consists of sturdy durable families that may have lived on the same plot of land for hundreds or thousands of years with very little but the occasional civil war to trouble them..

The Upper Middle Classes are prone to fashion in all things, and while they may adopt the names of the Upper Classes and Gentry out of snobbery, they will also invent. God save us from middle class cleverness, but they do invent!

The super rich media types are forced to be original. A common name does not open any doors in the Biz and even a comic-tragic name is better than no name at all.

The proper and serious Middle Classes ape the Upper Middle Classes or stick with family names that have been passed down as "heirloom" names.

The Lower Middle Classes name their children after famous people they admire for a moment such as soap opera characters, stars or football players.

The Upper Lower Classes give good bluff hail-fellow-well-met names or else follow the pattern of one of the higher classes.

The Lower classes have no names and no real hopes of making any for themselves so they are free to invent names or use nicknames to the almost complete exclusion of their baptismal names (if their parents ever bothered to have them baptized or christianed or whatever).

And the lower criminal classes have cast off bourgeois names and are known solely by pseudonyms for their own protection.

Traditional naming systems were designed to ensure that 1) people would know who your people are and 2) the names of the dead would not die with them but would be carried through the ...

Sir Bob made his fortune bizarrely: he invested in tv stations and more or less invented travel web-sites.

He didn't make money from Band-Aid or Live-Aid but he does command a pretty hefty engagement fee to give speeches these days which bothers some people for reasons that I can't be arsed about.

People can have sudden deaths for reasons other than drugs. I knew two people who died suddenly. One collapsed while walking in a mall with her two kids from a brain aneurysm. Another complained about headaches to her doctor for months before dying in her sleep. Turns out she had a massive brain tumor. Both were in their 30s.

Exactly. Never heard of the person before today.

She always seemed a bit naive, but good hearted. I couldn't hate her, even though she didn't seem very smart.

She was shocked to get pregnant right after having her first baby.

Anyone who is shocked by pregnancy gets a little pity from me.

Celebrity seemed to be a challenge for her.

I feel bad for her kids.

Agreed. But the cause of premature celebrity death is drugs more often than not. There's no reason to sugar-coat it with anecdotes about your friends or people you know who had blowouts, they're not known dope fiends and they can't afford to go out partying every night with the jet set crowd who do blow and smack like it's free.

You are right. Although we shouldn't jump to conclusions, if she was like that then the reason for her death is fairly obvious.

First, to the "no one knows..." crowd? The many subtle Boomtown Rats lyrics sprinkled in this thread say otherwise.

Second, Geldof's other kids seem pretty well-adjusted.

Thats too bad.  She'd been depressed for awhile.  The UK, London particularly, is a tough place to be famous.  It's a fish bowl.

No, he made his money from his Planet 24 television production company and the companies that followed. Among the many shows, he helped develop the original Survivor. His worth could be in the hundreds of millions.

My first trip to London, I had been there all of an hour and had just arrived at my flat for the week, I decided first thing to do was - to go out and find a pub and have a beer after the long flight. First person I run into was Bob Geldof with one young daughter, it was Peaches, she was around 6 or 7 then. We chatted for a couple of minutes on the street in Chelsea. Told him how much I liked the Boomtown Rats. He thanked me and pointed out a pub to try down the street. He was pretty nice, I must say, I was surprised at that.

Sad that she died so young.

I think it's a cool story. I saw Geldof twice in concert and met him after the show both times - he was really nice about hanging around outside and chatting with people. Hell of a nice guy.

Also: I guess Bob Geldof still don't like Mondays. That would also have been a better headline.

New material? On Fark? This is the place where people submit BuzzFeed pages based on Reddit's front page. The only thing left of originality here is the RIP Meme, and enough people biatch when people post that too. "Waaah, someone that has free access to Fark posted something so that I, with my free access to Fark, have to scroll past a little more."

We'll have to do that dick measuring contest thing you suggest.

I didn't put it in quotes.

The original version of one of the songs he co-wrote is the 18th best selling single of all time. If you add the sales of the 1989 and 2004 releases, it becomes one of only ten songs to have sold more than 15 million physical copies.

Moderately famous, I guess. If you were telling kids to get off your lawn in the 1980s.

I don't think co-writing a top-selling song is an automatic claim to fame. I've never heard of Irving Berlin, Max C. Freedman, James E. Myers (Jimmy DeKnight), Jack Lawrence, Frank Dostal, Rolf Soja, James Horner, or Will Jennings. All of these people wrote or co-wrote songs that have sold more physical copies than Geldof. Moderately famous is an accurate description, I think. Maybe he's truly famous in the UK.
